650nm & 635nm enough difference in color?

Hello folks,

Today I am asking if I should spend an additional $200-$350 to get myself a 635nm PL-E Pro in the near future when I have a 650nm coming in soon. I've owned both a 635 & 650 in the past but can't remember what they look like quite well. I took a look over some threads and got a good color difference but thought asking some members might help even more!

Thing is, would you say there is enough of a color difference for me to warrant spending $300 more for a laser only 15nm shorter in wavelength?

Well mine are just low power pens but I see quite a big difference. The 635nm is more orange red and is much brighter. I am not sure I would spend that much on one, only you can decide if it's worth it.

Thanks Alan!

Yeah, I did remember having my 635nm appear much brighter. It is listed on JetLaser's website that their 150mW 635nm units use a single mode diode, which is quite nice.

I shall see :)

635 is much brighter. It's more of a crimson red color compared to ruby red 660nm. The a noticeable difference I see is that you can actually see the beam of a >100mw 635nm in the sky quite easily. This is a one watt 635, but it gives you an idea.

Thanks Razako!

I think I might get a 635nm after all. It seemed to work fine when I had a 5mW rainbow going :D

I like 635. As you may remember when my 650 died I never felt much need to replace it an I still never have. A 30mW 635 is still loads bright and it's a nicer, more fiery colour than 650. I haven't pulled my lasers out for a while but I think it also has a very good beam spec, probably being a single mode diode.

To me its like the difference between 532 and 520. If you have seen the other color recently it pretty much looks the same. but that's me.

If you look at each by themselves, they both just look red. If you see them together, there is a tremendously noticable difference in the two.

650nm to me looks more red than the 638nm. 638nm has a bit of orange tint to it. I've gotten used to the color difference and don't need a side by side anymore. I look for that slight orange and the dot will look too bright.

Does anyone know if there are any cheap pens with 635nm ? would like to test one and compare to 650nm and perhaps in future invest in one from jetlasers maybe..

I find 635nm slightly better looking, but the difference is small. Far less than 520nm to 532nm or 462nm to 445nm.

I saw 635nm once. It is not actually quite "orange" but it is must brighter that the regular red laser.

635nm is NOT orange, yes. From wikipedia, orange has a range of 620nm-590nm so the real only "orange" lasers one could own would be a 593.5nm.

I am currently only trying to get the basic of the rainbow colors, not trying to fill any gaps in. I think I may just jump straight to 589nm :)
