I don't know much about LOCs - the 658 (I thought) was common wisdom as relates to the wavelength we see based on our usage. Of course, that could be wrong. Surely someone knows?

I don't think I'll be shipping this guy off anywhere anytime soon. I just built him, and he's completely unique in my collection. ;)

My curiosity is satisfied in that I now have a red portable that is much brighter than a LOC. That was my objective. Whether it's 660 at 1.5W or 630 at 100 mW really doesn't make a lot of difference to me - it's one of the brightest red portables I've seen.

My next objective is to kick this limit up even higher, with an HL6388MG. And again, it doesn't much matter to me what wavelength it hits on paper (or even how it compares in my relative brightness tool on spec). The objective for me is to outbright my previous best red, in a portable build. I'm not looking to burn things, and I'm not looking to wavelength collect (despite a slowly growing signature line).

Right now at least, what my eyes really crave, is as visible a red beam as possible ;)

If there's a trusted forum member here from Canada, I'd consider shipping this within Canada for spectrograph analysis - once I get a few more weeks to play with it ;)

rhd, you listed it as a 637nm 201mW. I bet that it is nearer at 642nm!

Here is a 380mW 660nm shot next to a 120mW 640nm:

The 640nm is visible brighter in reality.

Deleted my posts above.

Laser has to be powered with two CR123 batteries, the instruction said with a 18650 batt.

Anyway, review soon, but not in this thread ;)

Jake, this was the second laser I ordered next to my repaired/new 589nm

TY to all posting the great data in this thread- most of us teethed on red and therefore that nm still is a fav. +2 to you when I can. gotta spread some around til then.

When I posted this thread there was some clammer about whether my diode was *really* just shooting way up to 650 etc under the heat and/or current produced at 200mW. There wasn't much I could say, apart from providing my qualitative assessment of what I saw. It *looked* roughly 3 times brighter than any red I had ever seen. Yet, still many skeptics.

So, I ordered two sets of diffraction gratings, a 1000 / mm and a 500 / mm. Then I waited, and waited, and waited. Finally China came through for me.

My setup tonight was not as large or precise as I'll ultimately tackle once I have some time and a decent yardstick. However, as a control, I tried a green DPSS which the calculations pegged at 533nm, and a LOC which the calculations pegged at 657nm. Who knows what the LOC really is, but the green is obviously 532. So at 533 with my setup, I'm happy enough.

And.... this laser.... 640, and constant / solid / holding its ground. I'd bet that's really 639 once I do it with better measurements, especially given the over-shoot on my dpss green using the same setup.

To all the sceptics - Told you so :) hehe. All joking aside, I'm really happy about this outcome. Here's the tool for testing your own lasers' wavelengths:

^ Did you notice that the laser is brighter after putting it into the freezer for a few minutes?

just ordered 2x HL63133DG's rhd, looking forward to the 637nm wavelength :)

Hey big spender! Nice :)

Are you planning to combine the two in a PBS cube? That would be amazing.

Where did you purchase this ~638nm red diode and for how much? I would like to get a couple to replace the two 660nm red diodes in my RRGB laser projector which use a PBS cube to combine the beams. Thanks in advance!

Avnetexpress is the best deal on it at present.

Eventually this diode will be harvestable from projectors. After all, that is explicitly what Opnext designed it for. But for now, Avnetexpress.
