Hello!

I couldn't find any comparisson between a 3-element glass lens and a normal lens found on a 5mW red laser module:

3-element:

3-element Glass Lens Coated for 630-660nm Red Lasers | eBay

&

normal lens:

Red Laser Module - Focusable Dot (3.5V~4.5V 11.89mm 5mW) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

I'm about to order the 3-element lens on ebay to have a much higher output power from my homemade red laser.
I'm interested how much is the difference between those two lenses. Because I know there are people that know the difference and I want to know it :)

Cheers Boštjan

AFAIK low power reds will be using a plastic lens-

the AixiZ for red is glass.

for the 445 & 405(highower)using glass lenses is a MUST- plastic melts.

Generally the 'G' series single element lenses make the highest output while the AixiZ glass makes the best 'spot' .

If you found nothing at LPF is search you may have just not used the right search terms.

The normal lens is probably the single element acrylic lens in a plastic barrel. It isn't a bad lens because of it's single element, only two air-lens surfaces.

I made this comparison for the red Mitsubishi diode.
http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/lens-comparison-300mw-638nm-mitsubishi-diode-74967.html

I have sacrificed a lens from the laser housing bought on dealextreme ( it was scratched already and blocked most of the laser beam) and then I turned on my 1.6W blue laser and made the beam diameter small as the red one and shined though the lens and first I though it was a glass lens but turned out it was made out of plastic. "hahaahahah :)
The lens melted in 10 sec. I have already ordered the 3-element glass lens on ebay and cant wait to get it.

IIRC the 3 element glass coated for red has a 20% over acrylic....but that's a guess on something I "May" have read years ago.

This makes me think that the best lens you can get is the simplest one.
A plastic or a acrylic lens. And if thats true what "Fiddy" that the 3 element glass lens outputs less power than the acrylic one, Then the most expensive lenses are obsolete o_O?

The lens i'm currently using on my red laser is a almost closed plastic lens. I also put on the lens from my 1.6W blue laser and it made no difference at all, maybe it made the laser output weaker, i don't know.
I should used a LPM, but they are expensive.

If I recall, the red AR-coated acrylic (not the cheapo uncoated version) allows more power out of it than the 3-element lens if only because it has a single lens, not the three that have individual losses. The 3-element lenses might have better beam quality than the acrylic variety though, and you also need to cut the back out of the acrylic lens to allow all the light to come through.

Don't put the lens from a blue laser on your red laser. They're coated for different wavelengths.

From what I've read, can't recall were i read it, a three element lens coated for red will increase output by 15%. A G2 will go up to 30% increase. However, at such low mW, it probably is not worth it to go with anything other than the standard acrylic. I asked dtr about this with my 650nm 300mW build, and he said even at 300mW i should just stick to the acrylic.

sometimes it has the difference on aberrations. the 3 elements is supposed to be better.

The 3 element glass lenses give a better dot than G2's but G2's have more power (30% increase over standard aixiz acrylic) and the 3 element lens (if AR coated) is about a 15-20% increase over standard aixiz acrylic) because it is AR coated so there is a lot less light being reflected off the lens. The G2 is good because there is only 1 element there to pass through and are AR coated as well.

Have a good one
