Just saw this posted on Engadget HD!!

http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/03/03/sony-optiarc-europe-lets-loose-24x-ad-7240s-dvd-burner/

"While we're not totally in agreement with Sony Optiarc Europe's claim that its AD-7240S DVD burner (AD-7220 A/S pictured) is the first on the planet to achieve a 24x burn rate, we won't deny the awesomeness. Inappropriately hailed as a "speed miracle," the drive features the company's Auto Strategy Technology in order to ensure perfect burns every time. You should also know that it'll toast blank CDs at up to 48x and dual-layer DVD-Rs at 12x."

I imagine that this is going to capable of at least 750 mA. I think that this is going to cause for us at least a need for a

"next generation of driver". and some serious heatsinking. I'm also thinking that a ceramic diode housing with a aluminum

threaded bung.

Evolution is never easy. :p

Hello, McFly!!!

First of all, the new Flexdrive V4 is easily capable of reaching 800mA.
Secondly, this might not even be a 5.6mm diode, let alone a single mode.

It is single mode, due the fact its in an optical drive. However, it might not be 5,6mm imagine its a great new diode in the ugly plastic box packaging :-X.

It's probably going to be one of those rectangular diodes.

Yes, I agree, that's what the other models all have. I still dislike these drives, they burn at least one bad disk for every 4 or five I make. I have three of them unfortunately, and they are all the same, I cant believe they have improved this drive any at all, I would have to see it to believe it.
It would however be extremely cool if we could get a diode capable of 700ma from them, even if we have to make something to mount it in.
An lm317t would drive it just fine also. :)

Even if it is a rectangular diode, it would be worth machining a mount if it makes a lot more power than the long die open can. I mean, look at c-mount diodes. These plastic things are basically the same type of deal. Just need to find a good way to focus the light.

I would have to agree with you. I mean it could potentially do >400mW's. Yes, I know that someone has driven a LOC diode that far but these should last longer then those will.

Umm...

so who's going to be the first to tear one open and check the diode
hopefully it wil just be a normal 5.6 mm open can diode

its probably my ignorance talking  just cause im new here and all but wouldnt this dude right here have a really similar spec laser on account of being 22x dvd writer already?

newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106281

or this one:

newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118022

and for $20 seems cheap to mash one open and find out.....

We already know about those diodes.
