We did this when they first released them....i bought one for $30 or so......it's a flat plastic diode (like the ones in the LG 8x BR drives)

Thanks. If it is the flat one, which is the same as in LG, I have already had some experience with that one. The beam is slightly oval shaped, and not the typical rectangular shape you'll find in other laser diodes. This means that ALL the energy is passing the lens, even if the focal length is relatively long. The dot shape is pretty close to a gaussian TEM00.
I soldered the metal base into a brass YAG chrystal holder. very good cooling and worked great. I used that one in an optical trap I made. The optical trap-videos are here btw:

YouTube - Optical trapping !! 16x DVD laser makes a glowing dot in thin air!!

YouTube - Optical Trapping part 2 !! 16x DVD laser makes a lit red dot in thin air. Part 2

YouTube - Optical Trapping Part 3 !! Close Up Video - Now 1min 30sec video

Holy cr'p. optical trapping... I've never heard of that! From what I have seen, it appears that a tiny particle is being held by electromagnetic wave (light), trapped by the light itself. But it's just my wild guess...
Looks totaly awsome! Laser needs to be focused very close to that, right?
I'll definetly try that out, when I get home, with a red laser with glass lens.

I managed to did it with like, 3 cm foca lenght. Full power LOC though!
The trick is that you should attemt it in completely draft free environment, you must not breathe on it even!

Yeah, trick is to keep breathing.
Any air flow will blow the particles away.

You mean, 'NOT' breathing :D
But hell, it is difficult to acomplish that optical trapping. Taking every care that I don't breathe, and got no results.
Once I managed to get something, I said something to my brother, but I talked so I did cause some airflow on the particles, but they stayed there...

Did anyone reach a conclusion on the diodes contained in these drives? I can pick one up for $26 and I happen to have that in my wallet right now. 24X sounds like it should be a pretty decent diode... or not... ? Maybe I should bite the bullet, buy it and find out for myself.

Is that the same drive that Fry's has on sale all the time?

Those optical trapping vids are too cool! I like the 3rd one the best! :)

Total NECROpost dude, read post #4, moh clearly states its a flat plastic diode, not a can diode like you are used to using in an aixiz...
