So I am extracting the diode from this DVD burner as I type :san:

I was wondering what members here think would be a safe current to drive this diode at. I haven't extracted a diode out of a burner yet and don't know how to find the current to drive the diodes.

I'm pretty suer that my DMM has a diode test setting on it but I never used it and I think thats for standard diodes like the ones that would be used on a test load at .7V each..

What drive is it out of?

I ask because the only 22X's that I have harvested have been that flat diode in the Lite On drives. I have had several of those and they all died. I think due to overheating caused by running @ constant wattage in the little heatsink they come in.
Had one set as low as 200mA thermally adhered in an Aixiz module that I cut the back off of. Ran for just over 60 seconds before going LED.:cryyy:

Oh. The ones I did were 24X's not 22X's so hopefully yours is a 5.6mm can.

That made my heart hurt a little :( it's a Lite On drive.

But I may be in luck. it's a standard can diode, brass looking color. Can't really measure it yet, haven't had time to get it out of the little heat sink it's in. It's glued in with some sort of thermal glue, so I'm still thinking on how I should get it out.

Any hope in it not burning out like DTR's?

If it is a 5.6mm can you will be fine. Just press it into an Aixiz module.

Sad day, both diodes (red and infrared) had severe damage after extraction. By time I tried to light up the diodes with an extremely tested circuit, my red was past expensive LED and to the point I just couldn't look at it any more. just trying to keep my mind good by thinking (hey I extracted the diode because my burner went bad, may be it was initially the LD that went bad) even though it was probably me being too rough. Oh well, at least it was a learning experience and free. I would of lost it if it was like a $40 diode :)
