Hello to all readers,

I just made a 200mW red laser (Kipkay one) and it works great.

BUT I would like to put it in a Dorcy flashlight since it has a driver.
Could ANYONE tell me which Dorcy to use and how to do it (add capacitor or resistor or whatever, just something simple).
Nothing fancy, just something that WILL NOT kill my diode in 2.5 seconds :)

This is my diode : 200mW 650nm Laser Diode Kip Kay project suitable - eBay (item 180479555252 end time Apr-09-10 14:42:16 PDT)

and i put it in a aixiz laser housing : 650nm 5mW laser module.3.2V to with lens 650 nm OEM - eBay (item 380219852898 end time Apr-05-10 05:57:54 PDT)

And the 200mW kipkay video : YouTube - Laser Flashlight Hack!

Thank you to anyone who writes back to me...

Hey guys, some contructive posts here could be helpful to this guy.
Let me start.

Kyle, please don't follow ANYTHING what kipkay says, you can search his name here and find out why is he a #1 douchebag on this forum. He is lying and decieveing people only to gain popularity.

First, you overpayed your laser diode greatly.
You can go to:
Modwerx.com
hightechdealz.com
stonetek.org

Those three shops are owned by 3 guys which are very helpful and most trusted sellers and reputable members on this forum.
You will find that LPC-815 sled that contains such powerfull red diode costs around $10.
Also, you will find that a red diode already pressfited into Aixiz module (which is ~$3 each) and with driver installed is found here for example:
Aixiz Rkcstr Red 650nm 320mA Laser Module [Aixiz Rkcstr & 20x Red Laser] - $59.00 : High Tech DealZ, Simplifying the LASER Hobby!

A driver is a circuit that provides costant current source, in other words:
It will provide stable (example 350mA) current that you set, and it will 'auto-sense' the voltage and output as much as needed, not more.

Diodes are tricky components, if constant voltage is provided (like only batteries), the voltage will be drawn according to the resistance the diode provides.
The resistance in Laser diodes is very low, and at their operating voltage it will draw A LOT of current, effectively commiting hara-kiri.

So, you will first need to learn a lot about this hobby.

There is a lot of info in Stickied topics and FAQ section, and reading it all will answer almost all the questions you have.

Read the info that is written for members like you that are just getting to know stuff,
and
WELCOME
to the forum.

Enjoy your time with us here!

So anyway...ya I searched-up for kipkay and yup, he's a total douchebag:D
Thanks again for the help Eudaimonium.
I'll still use my diode and all but in the future, i'll buy them on the links you gave me:D
And yes i'll learn a bit more cuse i just got into electronics and laser...:D

P.S.
With my message, you were all like;

NOOB ALERT !!!

No problem.

Don't mind these folks, you would be suprised by amounts of threads started by new guys asking stuff that has been answered million times, so they don't have nerves to reply.

I do ;)

If you need ANYTHING at all, just PM me and I'll get back at ya real soon.
Good thing that you know how to use search and how to find info, you will find your way around real quick here.

So anyway, I'll be recieving my diode and housing soon so do you know a good mod I could do with a flashlight (Dorcy or other BUT NOT Maglites:crackup:)

Something like stick my diode and housing in a Dorcy Mini or something like that to make it look nicer:yh:???

If yes, please post a reply...:D

Thanks in advance

Well, you will learn that any flashlight can be a laser.
Only takes work.

You will also learn that you need proper machined heatsinks for various types of flashlight , not just for keeping your diode cool, but also for easier placing of the module inside the flashlight head.

You do not need any modding tutorials, you must find your way around and improvise.

You can get some good heatsinks for member Ehgemus here, he is quckly becoming a skilled machinist - well known skilled machinist that is.
He has some heatsinks that fit right into Dorcy flashlight and will hold your laser cool and in place.

Other than that, if you cannot buy a heatsink or machine it out yourself, you can improvise. For instance file a bigger hole in the flashlight's reflector and push the aixiz module through it and glue it in place.

That is what it makes this hobby, inovation and constructive thinking :)

Based on the diode i'll be using, does anybody know a driver that could be built ???
If yes, please let me know and a schematic or picture would be nice...:thanks:

I would reccomend that you use :
Rkcstr, or LM317/1117 homemade if you can supply 2x lithium batts
Or
FlexDrive or any other boost converter if you have only one lithium batt.

What is the power source for Dorcy Jr again?

ok thanks :)

But does anybody know how to make a home-made one with a few parts ???
Ofcourse, yuu will find DDL ( LM317, same thing) schematics all over this site.
Since I do not want to do all the work for you, you will have to find it yourself.
However, one you find it, post it here so I can tell you what can you change to make it simpler.
