Ok cool...

Not to 'nit pick', but could you define 'infinity'? Do you mean the best visual dot at a certain distance? Because the beam will continue to diverge.

Not trying to be a pain, just trying to get an idea of the exact focus for your testing...

It can be explained with geometrical optics:

1/x + 1/x' = 1/f

With x being the object's distance to the center of the lens
With x being the image's distance to the center of the lens
With f being the focal point's distance to the center of the lens

If the object x is at the same distance as the focal point f then the image x' is projected at infinity.

I guess I was just simply asking what were the lasers being focused on? At what distance?

I find that if I focus to best visual dot at 30', that is a great focal point for general pointing. But obviously if you then point at some thing that is 300' away, the dot will be out of focus...

It depends on the focal distance. Every lens has a different (fixed) f distance.

Excellent show of humility. Just a few more days now and I will be ordering something from you. Well more like 3 things. Dave is putting my 8x in a module for me in a few days. I hope I don't break it

Is he putting a driver on it? Just asking because that will be the determining factor in a suitable host choice with the best battery configuration for the driver...

I'm planning on ordering either the 4171 or 3405 with hot option (set to about 300ma). And one of the 405G1 lenses. I can't decide which one I want though. AAA's would be nice because I can get those cheap at walmart but the 4171 looks a little better

Yes, you are right on track with a battery choice decision...

With a 4171/FlexDrive build, I would install a silicon diode with the 'Hot' option to drop voltage. So you will only have one choice of batteries. 2 X CR123 primaries. You cannot use rechargeable batteries in that set up.

So with that in mind, I would recommend a 3 X AAA set up. Not only because the batteries are much cheaper, but you will have better capacity as well! :)

Also, you will have a choice of using normal AAA rechargeable batteries if desired.

In case you have not seen it, I have a nice side button host that looks more like the 4171 if you like that look. (smaller though) It uses 3 X AAA's. It's also $3 dollars cheaper... Check it out!

Thats a nice one, is it as good at heatsinking than the other two?
I had just read that a 18650 battery can replace 2 cr123's.
The green build I will do next requires one of them as well (your DIY green build). I'm going to take a chance at getting the new 200mw green module from O-like and see if its good or not. :can:

I've got my 8X in a Pocket Mini host...

Similar to the Pocket Mini, the 18650 host heatsink is held tight to the host. Aiding in the heatsinking properties of the build.

Are you looking for run times longer than a couple of minutes?

I guess I've gotten off topic and thread jacked my own thread... :crackup:

*frustrated* the beam isn't focused on any particular distance, the dot is set to the smallest diameter I could get 7.5 meters away, if I then choose to point it 100 meters away it will still have the same focus, but the dot will be much larger, but only because of it's divergence. That is what you'd call "focus it to infinity". A green laser comes focused to infinity right out of the box with it's x divergence.

I'm not so good at explaining it.
