I pulled the diodes out of my old DVD burner and I got a few other pieces of lens in there. Would this be suitble for the diode.
....Maybe I should just try it. Yes, but I want to know if making a laser pointer is going to cost me heaps.

You are supposed to install your laser diode into an aixiz module so it heatsinks the laser diode, and the module has a built in lens so you can focus the light.

You can use the other lenses , but they're not quite suitable for collimation.... :-/ A proper module is the way to go, and doesn't cost heaps.I mean , the diode is usually the most expensive part in making a laser.

I've already experimented with lenses from dvd burners, all the are good for are burning :(
When you pull out the main lens (the big one below the one in the picture (it's kinda hidden on some dvd burners) and couple it with another collimating lens, put it all in some laser diode holder (i have used the old cheap red pointer) you can get a focal point not too far from the lens (I can get it like, 2-5 cm) and it has awsome burning ability.
