They're aspheric convex lenses - similar to a magnifying glass. They shape the light of the HID lamp into a beam so it doesn't blind other drivers.

So would it be like a beam expander ???

If you were to use it backwards???

I've used one of these before, in certain automakers models, the glass is inlaid in what kinda resembles a "Fresnel" pattern, so either way, forwards or backwards, your beam will look kinda strange and wont be a "clean expanded or condensed circle". I salvaged one from a Toyota Camry - it was just like this, and the glass is pretty soft; easy to crack/ flake and such.. Good Luck! Your beam will look like Ruffles ridges. LOL but in rings.;)

These are good for making aspheric flashlights because they are a cheap source of aspheric lenses. However, only certain ones are clear. H7 Celica, 300zx, s2000, first and second generation TSX, just to name the main ones. If you look in the right places, you will find lenses that are larger diameter (3") clear replicas of their OEM counterparts. This is because while some people just throw in HID kits and call it a day, others actually source proper optics from OEM sources (OEM projectors are way way way better than aftermarket ones) and replace the stock textured lens with a clear one of the same focal length to attain a nice, crisp cutoff. Now, after that, they generally tweak it for some blue chromatic abberation at the cutoff, since they are also after that blue "flicker," but I'm getting off topic.

You can make a nice flashlight with those. Never tried collimating a laser with one, but it should work. You'll just have some power loss from being far from the diode, and those lenses are often molded, not ground, so they aren't the most precise optics.

If they're free, they're worth picking up, even if they are just for playing with or for paper weights.

I love projectors! Did a retro fit on my Rsx with some s2000s. They have the best cutoff in my opinion. Not sure how it would work on a laser but I'm curious to see.

Those are some cool ideas. + 1 rep! :) I'm gonna have to find some of those and experiment. :D
