is there anyway to harness the IR in a green laser pointer by breaking whatever turns the IR green?

You can remove the crystal setup (not recommended as it will probably ruin your laser) and it will be pure 808nm ir light. this is nearly impossible to collimate because the laser diode is made up of many smaller diodes but it will burn very well without a lens. rather than destroying a green buy a 808nm laser.

ps, if you are going to try this buy goggles.

darn, i had heard on here, someone posted a thing saying that when he tried to mod his green laser he broke the aperture that made it green and now its a burning IR laser, and thats what i was hoping to do as well, except on purpose. that being said where can i buy a powerful IR laser and about how much should it cost?

Well you don't need to break anything. If you want, you can "gently remove" the crystals, much better than breaking them. Maybe a DX200 green would give you somewhere near 1W of IR.

As I've seen , an IR laser from a company can be pretty expensive(check dragon lasers, s-ky...).Well at least compared to a diy.You could build a 2-3W way cheaper with diodes on ebay.

the only diodes i have to work with are a couple from some CD burners, i was actually hoping to use my 20mW green pen

No way you'd get 1W from a DX200. 500mW at most.

The crystals convert them from 808 to 1064 then to 532. All you have to do is remove them. But the lens will not focus the beam to make the laser of any use. The diode in a DX200 is probably 9mm multimode. If that's the case, you can put it in a Meredith module.

Or look up snoctony on ebay and get one of his diodes.

so if i were to try to convert it back to IR it basically wouldn't work as is? thats aggravating

yeah, basically.
but it's not hard to make it work. If you have a few good lenses and some patience, you could probably replace the collimating lens and get a decent 808 pointer.

argh, too complicated!! lol. before i try anything this drastic i think i should start and finish just 1 DIY laser. in the field of DIY i have barely 0% experience

I do it, ::) i break my greenie and now its only 808 but burning.

But it was an accident that i remove and loose the crystal, green is much cooler than invisible 808. :)

Spend some time to DIY, i can spend hours with some lenses and my greenie. ::)

Then those are some crazy efficient crystals ::)

If I remember correctly, the majority of these DX200s output around 140mW+- of green max and the rest is IR (unless you get lucky).
CNI uses 500mW pump diodes in their pens. There is no way a generic Chinese manufacturer that sells to DX is going to use higher quality components than CNI.

The DX pens cannot easily dissipate the kind of heat a 1W C-mount would produce.

I dunno what to say.1W sounds too much to have in a pen, but 500mW sounds too little for a cheap DX laser to produce that much green :-/

see burning is what i want, and an invisible burner would be cool to psych out my friends. as far as DIY is concerned it all comes down to money, today I'm going to get a BR module from Blu-Ray and try my first DIY laser that way

They don't output that much green.
Well, at least 90% of them won't and you'd be very lucky to get a constant 200mW of 532.

Liberty:
If you want a cheap IR burning laser, get a WL core from ebay and remove the crystals.
Voila! A 200mW 808 pen for $40.

The Cores look pretty easy to take apart.
