G-1 lens question

Hi,
Just bought a raw G-1 lens, one that is not inside a mount of any kind....my question is, which side of the lens needs to face the diode and which side is the exit? One side of flatter than the other...I was planning to try to remove one of the acrylic lenses I have and recycle the lens mount for use in an AixiZ style threaded module.
Thanks in advance!

It's a bare lens....there's no gold, grey, brass colored ring of any type....it's just a piece of shaped glass...it's not mounted in anything....you know like a loose diamond not mounted on anything, it's a loose lens...that's why I mentioned popping out the acrylic lens from one of my cheap acrylic AixiZ modules and want to try to put this loose lens into the little threaded lens holder which screws into the AixiZ module....

I hope I am more clear now....

The loose lens has one face that is more convex than the other....one side is almost flat.

Flat side toward the diode. You are going to want a custom barrel. Check out user Dave over @ PL. Plus the Acrylic lenses use plastic mounts.;)

Jmillerdoc;

The best mount of the two is the Aixiz 3-lens type.

This is one I used for some 445nm work:

As noted above the flat side of the lens goes toward the diode.

There are a couple of methods to fix the lens to the mount.

I used an epoxy to fix the lens to the mount with an aperture ring.

I assume you used the epoxy and ring to try and center the lens? When I tried using the three element Aixiz retainers I could never get the lens element centered and gave up in search of new retainers.

I currently have a great retainer that I found by stroke of luck but I have also used the retainers from Dave over @ PL which are awesome but expensive. And of course Jay does a great job with making his own but I don't know if he will sell just the barrels.:beer:

Yes, Jay will sell the Barrels only for $27 +$3 shipping....I was hoping for a cheaper (free) solution, that why I bought the bare lens for $25....

I am going to do some experimenting to come up with a good cheap alternative.

About how much play is there between the ID of the three element housing and the OD of the G-1? I have some different diameters of copper tubing I was thinking of expanding to the OD of the lens and cutting a small piece to fit around the lens snug to hold it center....if we are talking less than a mm this may work...

BTW Larry, got those 18650's a few days ago...very, very nice batteries! For the price they are unbeatable.
