Just spoke a bit with Dreamlasers about the possibility to get a hand held DPSS red laser as they have recently started to produce new red DPSS modules.

They however did not want to incorporate these into hand held portable units. But instead recommended a 655nm direct diode based laser pointer with a circular beam. I asked about some details on how this was achieved and received the reply:

Unit Price: US$52.00

100mW SDL-655-EFLP-100
Unit Price: US$63.00

150mW SDL-655-EFLP-150
Unit Price: US$78.00

200mW SDL-655-EFLP-200
Unit Price: US$94.00

Delivery: 2 weeks ARO

For the beam, first, this LD is special custom-made single mode output, second, we deal with the beam in optics, so make the beam to circular,

I asked about details on these optics;

About the corrective optics, it's our secret, we can't provide to you info

I am however considering ordering a 50mW for dissection and studying. Would anyone feel up to chipping in for a few bucks each for me to do this? I'll in that case ask about the price incl shipping.

Then I'd provide detailed pics taken with my Nikon D90 DSLR.

This might come in handy for our 445nm DIY builds?

Asked if we may buy the corrective optics by itself for 445nm DIY builds. Supposing they will have to be coated differently, but we will see what they think. :)

It really isn't that hard to create a "circularish" beam with 655nm diodes. They're not multimode like 445nm diodes so they don't have the same kind of bar-profile that 445nm diodes produce. Even cheapo Aixiz lenses can make very circular beams.

I would first check if they have anything specifically for 445nm. Cylindrical corrective lenses are not hard to come by, and can be bought cheap at sites like Surplus Shed. The issue is that if they're coated, it's usually for red. If you can find 445nm or broadband AR-coated optics for a decent price, then you'll have something, but for a 655nm laser? Anyone can do that.

Yeah. The 445nm did look worse than the 650nm output. Thanks for pointing out and explaining :)
