Hi all, here is a guide how to make your own diffraction grating.
It's easy, fast to make & cheap.

What you need: - any old CD
- a bit tape
- something to cut the CD
- a few seconds of your life ;)

1) Cut the CD in at least 2 parts (watch picture)
Remove the reflective side with tape.
2) Put both together. It's Important to make it how the picture shows!
3) Fix it with tape. And the diffraction grating is ready to use :)

Protect eyes of reflection!!!

CDs do have all those pits and valleys and other weird optical crap going on....
 
My first laser show was a piece of CD attacked to my fan with a 5mW red laser shining onto it.
 
So how much can you modify the the density of the "burning" before you can detect a change in the output pattern ?
Would burning a complete CD with a 700MB file of "10101010101......010101" create a fine pattern while burning a file of "11111111000000001111111100000000..." creates a much less dense field of points ?

And how about using the microwave to remove that aluminum layer ? Have you seen what I mean ?:whistle:

Have you tried a third or fourth layer ? Do they add too much interference with the low grade plastic ?
 
Sweet it works, i just ripped apart a cd and tried it. For mine it seems to produce a better pattern if i leave a few millimeters of open space between each of the layers of chopped up disk. Im using three peices and the results are impressive.

Chickens, because he brought it to the attention of the forum first.

You have to stop double, and triple posting. Its frowned upon here. We call people post whores because they are trying to add more posts to their count.
