I believe it starts as a projection hologram and it etched from there. Darn -- They mass produce the stupid little ones and they work with my DL95 --- but not on the clouds.

Niko -- If you find one -- You da man !!
Remember that the DG's with the little lasers project a 6' immage at 5 to 10 feet. We need an immage which will project at ~ 1000' on the clouds. Maybe a lens will be needed.

so im still not gettin ANY information on the internet about how this gratings work / or are made.

i now about how the holograms work, but these things are way to cheap to have this technology applied.

those things are in fact custom made gratings. and as it seems production costs are a minimum..

how does this work? there has to be a DIY way

You know, you could also use a CD. It´s one of the simpliest but also cheapest diffractiong ratings :)

Can't tell ya how they're made but I do actually have a batman one  ;D

It came with a cheapo red pointer and about 40 other gratings that I paid like $2 for  :p

(sorry it's at home so I can't get a pic of it for you guys)

as promised i took one apart and viewed it under a microscope.

first: those are really gratings, and not some masking.

this is the original shape:

this is an acylic piece (not a lens!) with a semi-transparent print(?) on one side.

so any physics proof people here, that can explain me how the heck this all works?!

is this some kind of printed transmission holoram?

interesting tidbit:

Another major advance in display holography occurred in 1968 when Dr. Stephen A. Benton invented white-light transmission holography while researching holographic television at Polaroid Research Laboratories. This type of Hologram can be viewed in ordinary white light creating a "rainbow" image from the seven colors which make up white light. The depth and brilliance of the image and its rainbow spectrum soon attracted artists who adapted this technique to their work and brought holography further into public awareness.
Benton's invention is particularly significant because it made possible mass production of Hologram using an embossing technique. These Hologram are "printed" by stamping the interference pattern onto plastic. The resulting Hologram can be duplicated millions of times for a few cents apiece. Consequently, embossed Hologram are now being used by the publishing, advertising, and banking industries.

I tried it on my laser printer (Advertised as 600DPI) and got nothing. You really need a few orders of magnitude more resolution for this to work.

Cool pics, man!

Would love to see some more research into this. I had completely forgotten about the batman diffraction grating :p
