You'll need to adjust the actual power going to the diode to properly decrease it, a simple optic that absorbs most of the lasers power would probably have heat issues, im not really an optics expert myself and the only ways i've seen it done is via different power modes.

Maybe there is a semi reflective optic that could be angled, you could try cutting out a small square of some cheap Laser glasses and putting it on the end of the laser at a slight angle (Avoid redirecting the light straight back into the diode).

Either way i suggest simply limiting the amount of power going to the diode, maybe somewhat with a better knowledge of optics will chime in.

Sure it is. I have lenses like that. They are referred to as "safety" or "training" lenses. They on average emit ~ 20% of the lasers output.
I can post a picture of the lens if you want to see one of them.

COmpletely forgot some lasers came with these, how exactly do they work though without heating up?

The strongest hand held I have used one on and tested it with a LPM is ~ 2400mW
No heat or burn issues with the lens at about 2 minutes of constant run time.
Higher power outputs or longer run times might create issues but I never heard of any issues.

Very nice LC. You are a fountain of useful information.

Another twist to safety lens, this patent is circa 2003. Ever see/hear of anything like this manufactured?

Well that is a new one on me, laser safety contacts. Interesting but not practical IMHO because if you switch lasers that you are working with say from 445nm to 650nm you would need to change your contacts. What if the darn contacts slid out of position and were tucked up under your eyelid?

Here are some pictures of the lens. Say you have an Arctic at 2400mW on high. Low power would be ~ 360mW and then the lens will reduce it down to ~ 72mW

I do have this lens for sale.

There's always a better idiot, there are more born everyday.

Laser safety contact lenses sound like a ridiculous idea to me, but who knows maybe they will end up being used, I frequently think advances in technology will have no limits.

Apparently these lenses only come with certain lasers, a couple of Google searches found nothing.

It could be absorbed as heat with a glass optic. Is the optic straight or at a slight angle? The other option is reflecting 80% of the light back inside the host. However, the optic would need to be at an angle so that the light isn't reflected back into the diode - this kills the diode.

I can post a picture of the lens if you want to see one of them.
you can also buy moon filters for telescopes that pass 13% light ( I have 2 never used them , but the moon through 50x zoom is like getting a led shined at you at night it kills your night vision)

Edit: those contacts where never made cause if you get a hard hit the heat would still damage your eyes. Lawyers probably told them that along with what if one isn't dyed or shaped right. Honestly the idea is stupid since it's a lens and it could make it worse by focusing it. Then there's the fact what if the wearer messes it up and dosen't know.
