Can't Focus My Blu-Ray

one of mine seemed to focus pretty well with the lenses about a mm or 2 out way out :-?

another thing i did with one i needed to focus in was i took the ring off then focused it where i needed it then carefully screwed the ring back on til it got snug against the module making sure to not let the lenses turn. you can also stick a tiny screw driver in the ring and hold the lenses from spinning and tightly tighten the ring down.

Anyways, i just decided to put an o-ring in the focusing ring, so now i have no problems...

I find the easiest way to test for culmination is to set up a mirror as far away as possible, then your dot will end up near where the laser is, so you can adjust it while being able to see the dot up close.

What do you mean removing the ring? I have mine set to "infinity" pretty well but its kinda fat up close. Do you know why you can't have it skiny up close but remain somewhat smaller far away? If I adjust it to be a good burner it gets all fat like 5 feet away.

Yep.  That's the way light works.  It is only small at its focal point.  If you make the focal point very close (like when you burn stuff) the beam diverges quickly on the other side of the point.  If you set the focal point as far away as possible the beam will be smaller, but not as small as when you are looking at the focal point.

I thought that was strange when I got my first blu ray. Then the DX arrived and it's the same only maybe worse. Focus it up close and far away it is a fat blob. It seems bot the red and blu ray are like that. I have three greenies (fixed focus) that don't behave like that, their dot is pretty good both up close AND far away. Any reason why?

Like daguin said, that's the way light and refraction works.
Because of the diode chip size and the index of refraction of the wavelength blu-rays have a starting diameter (after lens that is) of around 4.5-4.7mm and red lasers a little less than that (maybe 3.5-4mm after lens). Then, depending how you focus it, the laser beam will either diverge farther away from the lens, or converge to a focal point then diverge back again(see diagram).This is pretty basic stuff here.

Now greenies work a little different, you know: pump diode -> YVO4 -> KTP .The KTP produces a much thiner beam with a round single mode TEM[sub]00[/sub] dot (the ones that function correctly af course  ) unlike diodes that make a line or some other sort of strange blob.
The fixed focused ones are set to infinity, meaning they're set to diverge after the lens, but to diverge as little as possible (and here you have your typical 0.7-1.5mRad for a greenie)

Just play with one of the optic simulators that you can find in some threads in the optics section, and then try to experiment the same way with one of your variable focus lasers in some fog and observe the same things happening, you'll get it.

I feel stupid for having to ask this...

How do you focus a laser? Is a lens required to build a burning Blu-ray? If so, do you focus the lens, and if not, can you focus the Aixiz module?

when i burn 3 sticks of incense to get beam shots i take out my dx 200mw red and play with the focus, you can see the focal point in the air exactly like your diagram! i'll try to take some pictures in the next week of this but im not sure if my camera will pick it up
