Default Camera Lens As Laser Optics?

Hey Guys
I read a threat about using a telescope with a laser and I was wondering if a objective lens of a small sized camera wouldnt be useful for using with a laser?
I mean if I manage to control the focus and zoom seperately I could have a pretty handy and even retractable device. Would be nice for a handheld lase wouldnt it?

Yup, lenses are lenses. You can use them for any kind of optical stuff. One problem might be that the telescope may not be anti-reflective coated for the wavelengths you're using and your can lose some output due to reflections.

Ok now for some details:
I heard about ar coated lenses that pass through laser better.. how and why das that work?

Andfor the camera lens: would only the focus be interesting? Or could I also use the zoom for effects on the beam?

The AR coating is a chemical coating that reduces the amount of light that reflects from the surface depending on the wavelength.

You'll have to see if the camera lens will actually focus things the way you want them to. I've found that most lenses made for telescopes, etc. don't focus the way I want them to out of the box because they're not meant for projecting light out. So you'll have to experiment.

how about prefocusing the laser before it goes into the objective lens and use it just to change focus?

Default Re: Camera Lens As Laser Optics?

prefocus if you can do that why do you need one more lens in front of it all for the beam to pass through.
every time you put glass in front of a laser beam you cut down the power.

i thought you could use the cameras optics to change the focus and have a permanent lens in between. but seems like thats too inefficient as you say
