Broken tip on 301

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to fix my broken laser 301. It rolled off the table when I had the front cap off and when it hit the floor the front piece popped off. Bummer. Nothing broke on it and when I place the piece that fell off where it belongs I can see green light shine through. Any advice? It would be unfortunate if it's junk :( Thanks

Yeah, not really needing anything fancy right now, thanks. Just need it for star photographing purposes. Good to know that's a possibility though.

You should be very careful - it looks like the crystal set and expander lens popped off. Without that in place the only output will be high power IR at 808nm.

As others have said though, not really worth fixing - at least not worth spending any money on. Could be worth while "experimenting" with it - but you'd need laser glasses for 808nm to be safe. I'd either but another 301 or get something with decent quality if I had the cash. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. How do I know which one/brand make good lasers? There are so many to choose from. Usually you get what you pay for, I get that, but is there a particular brand(s) that is better than the others?

OK first off don't even turn that pointer on your crystal has broken off exposing the high powered IR pump diode.
throw that laser in the trash and like others have said get yourself a new one.

If you need one for astronomy Get yourself one from any astronomy catalog as they will be legal and 5mW.

Other companies to look for Are Laserglow and Z-bolt.

OK, thanks for the advise. Battery out. Never to be used again. Crazy, they seem so innocuous but they're NOT! The light is hardly visible. Of course, that's because it's IR radiation. I'm glad I asked. Thanks again.

whoa whoa don't throw it out! You can still use the laser host and driver. Heck with enough work you could realign the crystal assembly and fix your laser! Even if not you can replace the laser module with your own build but for goodness sake don't just throw the whole thing away. Give it to someone that can fix it or will make use of it for themselves. Why so wasteful? The value of the laser shouldn't matter when you are interested in making and repairing useful laser parts.

I tried re-aligning it. Seemed like an exercise in futility. I don't plan on throwing it out though. I disassembled it and now I'm wondering if I can replace the diode/laser with a new, better quality one. Any suggestions? Much appreciated :)

We suggested throwing it away to keep OP safe. Attempting to align it without proper eye protection is potentially very dangerous.

As for hosts - getting a kit would be the best way to build something yourself. These hosts aren't the best for doing your own build.

Here you go Nice quality ones.
5 mW Green Laser Module | FDA IIIa, IEC Class 3R

You will have to bypass the switch But that's not hard. or solder a spring in replace of the wires.

Also Don't try to realign it without Goggles for 808, 1064, AND 532nm.

I'll keep the old one for future possibilities. For now, at least I have an extra battery for the replacement 303 laser I bought online. It's probably not a high quality unit but it will serve my purposes. It bummed me out at first that I broke it because I just bought it, but I'm over that now :)

Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions!!
