Binocular's used for focus?

This may sound silly, but I think that binocular's magnifying power would be great for a 5mW unfocused laser. If anyone has tried this or done anything like this, feel free to tell me. I was also considering taking apart the binocular's and hand creating a super strong magnifying lens. Any input is appretiated, please don't post any rude or negative things please.:thanks:

You can do something much cooler and use one end( the side you normally look into) to make the dot 10x bigger, but the dot will also diverge 10 times less so it will really go much farther. If you do it the other way it will have a opposite effect.

I was hoping to make the dot smaller (more focused) to possibly burn some things. lol. I'm all up for trying whatever it takes though. I'm not sure what making the dot bigger would do, unless it wasn't disfigured and scattered. But thanks for the idea anyway!

If you want to burn get a magnifying glass and put on some goggles so you can see the dot at its smallest point.

Well that's sorta my problem. lol. I don't have a magnifying glass, I forgot to get one when I purchased all of my laser's. I was hoping to just makeshift my own, better magnifier using binoculars. Rather then waiting 3 weeks to get something from DX.

Magnifying glasses are not a black market item, they're inexpensively available in stores all over.

Binoculars would work, but they have at least 2 and as many as 6 optics the beam has to pass through. This means high losses. You could take a single lens out of it, but burning with 5mW is like drag racing with a moped.

Which lens would be best to use? I have a high end pair of binocular's so probably 5 len's. Im thinking the end lens? Which would be the biggest one of them all.

DONT DO IT! Unless you really want to. Good binoculars arnt cheap. Really any lens that magnifies text will have about the same effect. Go to walmart and find a *glass* magnifying glass and it will work just as well for like 3 bucks.

Heck for $3 I will send you a few glass optical lenses to play with if you want

lol, Well my binocular's have 3 lens's, and what i have planned is not to tear it apart, but just to unscrew a few parts. When i took off the end of the binocular, and looked back through it from the opposite side, It made everything far away and tiny. And i think that would be great for focusing it into a tinier beam. (for burning)

You are not going to get anywhere with a 5mw and some binoculars. The reason is that binoculars take collimated light and expand it, and recolimate it. It does not focus light to a point. Yes, I have tried it before as a beam expander, alignment is difficult. On the other hand, it sounds like you have everything you need, why don't you try it out and tell us how it goes?

Well thanks for the input, I havn't received my order yet:cryyy: , So i don't know if it will work, Since all of my magnifying glass's are absolutely HUGE, I'm not sure if they would do the trick like the little ones that I see people using.

They will work the same. Depending on the curvature they will have a longer or shorter focal point but there will be a focal point regardless.

50mW is going to be pretty boring though. You might be able to smoke some plastic if its overspec but only barely. Ive messed around with optics and low power pointers before and its only entertaining for 5 minutes or so.

Well, I was just hoping to have a brighter beam, lol. And its going to be a 5mw, not 50mw.:undecided:. I'll have a 100mw 405nm though, but since its from dx, its probably 75mw or so. Anywho, I have plans on burning some things with that, if possible.

lenses won't make 5mW's worth of photons magically turn into 50mW's worth. More like, they rearrange the photons, or change the direction that the photons are going, depending on where on the lens they hit.
