Surely, there is a screwy bit in the aixiz glass lens thing that we could use to take out the lenses and soak them in sulphuric acid (unreactive with glass, so perfect).

I have access to tons of sulfuric acid at work, so Maybe I'll try that. Right now my glass lens is just sitting because all my recent builds are high power blu-rays :-/

I cant get the lens assembly apart, I wonder if the metal is reactive with H2SO4 (Sulphuric Acid).

I couldn't get the metal lens assembly apart either.. I think it's glued together. I gave up on it long ago.

Here is one to consider from "Surplus Shed":
http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/pm1028.html
Coated for 405nM, F.L. of 6.5mm, 14mm dia. though, will not screw directly into an axis, and its $80.

I hope not, but I'm thinking the coating will dissolve faster than the metal.

Umm, how will that help you?

Inside that metal, there are three glass lenses. And if i remember correctly, each of the three has coating on both sides.

Besides, i kinda have a feeling the metal will dissolve sooner..

Why not dip one end, and see if the glue holding it shut will dissolve in there, then unscrew it.. That way it doesnt't get ruined. IF you manage to dissolve the coating, you'll be left with acid and residue inside the assembly and the lens will be useless anyhow.

Glaserfan: didn't you manage to dissasemble the metal nut with the three lenses?
How did you break the glue bond?

I'm trying to find a good lens nut for custom 405nm glass lenses. I'm probably gonna use the plastic AixiZ lens nuts to hold them tho..

The metal ones are VERY hard to get appart.. I also measured the power with the triple element glass AixiZ lens, and the power was no higher, than with a clear acrylic... A 650nm AR coated acrylic is much better than both.

I don't know if the lens sucks so badly, or if it is the opening at the back.. It's smaller than if you remove the back of the plastic nut...

Default Re: Best lens for Blu-Ray?

I have AR on my glasses.
I went out target shooting w/ some friends and something from the guns got on my glasses. It was an oily mix of gunpowder residue and oil, and gun cleaning solvents.
Basically, I got a little splash onto my glasses out of the back of the rifle.
When I wiped my glasses off w/ my tshirt, the AR coating just smeared right off!

Not so good for my glasses, but maybe a lead as to what to try on getting AR coating off. has anyone tried a strong non-polar solvent?
Maybe I'll pop this little meredith lens in a shot glass full of lacquer thinner, or DCM or something.

Default Re: Best lens for Blu-Ray?

You shouldn't do that to the Meredith lens.. It is good enough for 405nm as it is.. Better even than a clear acrylic.. It's possible it has a multilayer coating for a wider wavelength spectrum.. If so, you could make it worse..

AixiZ glass lenses are the problematic ones because they are triple element and have a 650nm AR coating on both sides of each of the three lenses. And yet the six coatings are nowhere that bad as a 650nm AR coated acrylic lens, which halves the power.. A good cheap solution is a clear acrylic. The best for now is the Meredith (i wouldn't mess with it)..

I am having custom 405nm AR glass lenses made at the moment. The factory is drawing up some offers, and they will be made in two weeks after i confirm the final specs.

The focal length will be approximately in the middle between an acrylic and the Meredith - the beam will be tighter than an acrylic, let much more light through (glass and 405nm coating) and have a bit better focusing abilities than a Meredith.

For now i ordered 24 with a 405nm coating and 6 with a multilayer coating (400-750nm) which will work great for reds as well. After i test them and confirm they are good, we could do a group buy for more of them. They are expensive, but less so than a Meredith and will work in AixiZ modules.

I just need to find the plastic AixiZ lens nuts to mount them in. The ones, that contain a clear acrylic.. I don't want to waste entire modules..
Anyone know, where i could get just the nuts with the non AR coated plastic lens?
