Hi new here, there's this really cool effect that lasers give when waving it across smoke. It like swirling madness, in order to make it appear the "waving" creates a "wall" of light but only temporarily. I was wondering how i can make a wall of laser light with optics.

Hi, welcome to the forum. There are numerous diffraction gratings available that may suit your needs. However, I'm not entirely sure I understand your question. Check out the optics section I am certain you'll find what you're looking for after poking around in there.

Sounds to me like he's looking for a basic scanner :D

not a scanner really say with my handheld laser i point at a picture frame i want the beam to reach the upper left and right corners in one thin line without moving the laser like a scanner does with mirrors.

So you need a line grating. I think that's what it's called. Optics aren't really my thing, but they do have optics that will give you a line.

A cylindrical lens will spread the beam into a line. Depending on the curvature of the surface (the focal point of the lens) the line will spread more or less.
This will make a "wall" which will make it easy to see the swirling smoke in the air.

1) PC case fan.

1) Hex bolt.-The larger the bolt the easier mounting the mirrors will be.

6) small mirrors- I mean TINY

At least that's how i did it once....

Glue 1 mirror on each of the 6 sides of the bolt then glue the bolt to the Case Fan.
Start the fan spinning and point your laser at the mirrors.
Pretty easy?

This is what you are trying to copy.....

The line that the spinning mirrors create, will the DG line have the same "liquid sky" effect. Will on have beeter results then the other?

or, you can do it like rog8811, with double sided mirror. I recommend you to somehow cover one side of this mirror (by black electrical tape), so you can easily get 1 line, without precision settnig and centring of mirror

If you have an old tft or lcd screen (from computer or even in an old color screen cell phone) lying around you can pull it apart. There are several layers of plastic behind the front panel... Shining a laser through them individually produces some very nifty effects, one of which is a clear straight line, and another that is a short pixelated line. If I remember right, there is also a sheet in there that does a circle if you have it at the right angle. But yeah, cheap way to get some use out of broken or outdated electronics. You can just cut them down with scissors to get a size that fits.

You want any one of these:
Line Generating Optic - Optics - Novalasers Inc.
Round (Line-Generating) Lens - Optics - Novalasers Inc.
Rod (Line-Generating) Lens - Optics - Novalasers Inc.
Square (Line-Generating) Lens - Optics - Novalasers Inc.

This is the easiest and cheapest way to get a line from a laser beam. No moving parts required.

What laser are you using, by the way?

Hello, newbie here, do you have any shops that sell besides line generating lens, coz I need different pattern while using 3 laser pointer at the same time :thanks:

What are the difference between these lenses?
If i want a uniformly lit line, which lens should I get?

Any idea if I can use these lenses on any regular laser pointers?
