Default Back of Aixiz Lens

Hey guys, I've read some posts around the forum saying to englare the hole on the back of the aixiz lens, but why exactly is this necesary? Will the plastic melt if you leave the laser on for some time? Will the beam become too wide once you englare the hole? Sorry if this has already been answered, I looked around a lot but I couldn't find anything. Thanks for the help. ;D

That little hole "prettys up the beam"! But you loose some power because of it. I open mine up to get it all.

Thanks for the replies guys, so the plastic won't melt if I leave the hole as it is, right, cuz I did read something (not sure where it was) about somebody who got melted plastic stuck to the lens because he didn't englare the hole.

Depending what wattage and duty-cycle you're going for yes, it could melt enough to deform, although actually sagging onto the laser window seems a bit much.

I've never gotten mine to pop off as some have said, but I've had good luck CAREFULLY enlarging the hole with an xacto knife. I scratched the 1st lens I tried this on though so cut at an almost horizontal angle if you use this approach.
Also if you do, use some dust-off on it afterwards to make sure there aren't any little plastic-shavings hanging around.

The beam *does* look nicer though with the small hole if that matters to you.

Ok, thanks for the reply, I'll probably drive it at 250mA max, and see how it works out, so I guess the beam looks like this with the hole englared:

How do you get it to pop off? Do you just pull it out? :-? I thought the black plastic where the lens is was just one single piece.

I had a bear of a time getting the one to pop off on my aixiz. The DX module was much easier.

Ok, but how do you get it to pop off? Do you stick something in the hole and then pull it until the back part comes off? Also, can you put it back once you pop it off, or would you have to glue it? :-? Sorry for all the questions. ;D

This is how I opened up mine. Not popping but cutting.

Holding the lens housing lightly with locking pliers(just to have something to cut towards other than my thumb).

Use a straight edge razor to cut the plastic horizontally as shallow as possible in the direction of the pliers.

Turn and repeat around the edge to make 4 wedges.

Then just pry up the wedges with very small flat screwdriver, such as glasses repair screwdriver.
The plastic is pretty stiff so it just cracks off nice and clean around the edge.

Takes about 1 minute

I just scraped it all off. But this might be much better!

ust be careful of what you use to clamp it in place. You could screw up the threads by clamping it with too much force.

You guys, thanks for the help but I solved this problem a long time ago. ;D
laserfreak, what's the output of your laser with a normal acrylic lens, I think jayrob said he tested the aixiz glass lens and he only got 1 extra mW out of it, compared to the 50mW from the meredith glass.

Yeah I clamped it very lightly just to hold it steady enough to cut towards the pliars instead of cutting towards my thumb.
