OK Gents...Here it is...Prototype 1 " EZ A-Prism Adaptor " See attached drawing and pics of the APM-AO-V8

This adaptor is similar to a Beam Expander unit. It screws on to the M9 x .05 Collimation lens barrel of ANY Hand unit. Once attached and in the optimal radial position, simply tighten down the 4-40 set screw to lock the unit in place !!

The internal optics are a anti-reflective BBar coated pair of Anamorphic prism's.

I started with a 1.312" (33.32mm) Aluminum Rod stock. Holding the round work piece was challenging....until I purchased a V-Clamp vise !!!...Then....." Bob's your Uncle " !!!! Still takes time to machine thru that much Aluminum cross section !!

For now....I am using a hacked Maglite D cell flashlight body for the Black knurled outer tube !!! Works !!! Looks good to me !! I have yet to locate a source for just this stock !!

For illustration purposes.....see the unit screwed on to a Cree Aurora host !!
Shown with the Anamorphic Prism's in place....but not yet secured !!

This unit will correct the 445 series diodes...including the new High power one....AND will correct the 1W 520. The V8 will NOT sufficiently correct the astigmatism of the Mitsui 638nm LD's !!! They are just too bad and demand Cylinderical lens correction !!!

Thoughts ???????????????????????? Please post if you have an interest !!! I may be able to locate a source for these units !!

can we get some comparative dot/beam shots? say between your setup with a g lens vs just a 3 element or just a g lens. I'd say between your setup with a 3 element against the other two again, but why loose all that power in the 3 element if the prisms are going to be doing the cleaning up, right?

speaking of power loss, what kind of numbers are you getting?

a shame it's insufficient for the mitsu's. I just got one of the new oclaro 638s and could swear it was reverse engineered from the mitsu. it is nearly as terrible, just has a diode window, and more symmetrical wings. what a nasty beam they make

Well....A LOT less than the Edmond Optics version @ $ 395.00 !!! Yikes !!!

The Prism's are $60.00/pair.....So...start there...and ADD from there !!! Cost would depend on units produced !!! I just do not know !!

How much is it worth to " Hammer " that beam into a small shape verses a bar

It has been quite awhile since I tested....But...I remember...loss under 4%

I have a M140 to do a comparison with !! I do not have a high power Blue or Green to do an A/B comparison.

Yea...to bad about the new Red....For now....the only way to " Forge " a Red beam into submission....in a Hand Held...is the " Dragon's Head " design !!!

Hey hey hey, not half bad! ;) Glad to see a working version, CDBEAM! looks like my idea/drawing helped birth this idea, or am i wrong? if so, awesome! if not...you owe me royalties! :p

Just personal preference, i think this will look better on big hosts, like a maglite or what have you- more flush with the host, rather than being a big chunk on the end- although to be honest. it looks pretty cool on that host as is!

Is focusing possible post corrective optics? Could I add an additional lens set after to give me focusability?

As far as focusability.....MMMmmmmm ????

I see NO reason a particular focus could not be set....THEN....the EZ A-Prism unit be added. THEN....the optimal radial position be determined and locked via the set screw.

This requirement of radially adjusting and locking the V8 MUST be done. These are the laws of Optics.

Most pinpoint focus applications are done within a fairly close range...............( Nearfield). The real advantage of Adaptive/corrective optics is to tame the beam from a bar to more a spot at a Distance (Farfield).....so...to me....the applications seem to be somewhat mutually exclusive.....BUT....
to answer your question.....YES....focusability can done with Adaptive corrective optics

I would say.....that the V8 is a superior offering... as compared to the " Tiddy Bear"( Maybe NOT ?????).....but.....we can dream !!! HAHAHAHAHAHA :drool:

As far as looks go....well...it should be NO SUPRISE....I would slip a clear Acrylic tube over the whole Scahbo....cause I like to admire the SPECKLE reflection off the glowing optic components....but...then....I am likely at the far end of the Bell Curve with this preference !!!

Whatever Floats yer Boat !!! The current OD geometry is driven by the size and required alignment of the A-Prism's....Just the way it is !!!

Glowing optics is way more appealing than an enclosed unit imo :)

So what happens now?

Have been really busy with build for customer and work !!! I had a further thought.
When I screwed on the prototype to a HH 445 I had... the Collimation lens had a tendency to turn...and de-focus !!! SOOooooo..now what !!

The coupling can be accomplished...but....with this unwanted side effect !!

A solution would be to use the front section from an Aixiz module. Screw that on to the collimation lens...tightly.
SOoo...the Axiz piece now presents a smooth cylinder OD...extendind forward of the collimation lens.

Now.....the adaptor could have a corresponding SMOOTH bore on the adaptor unit vs. a threaded bore....so the adaptor "slips " over the Axiz barrel. Once in place...AND in the correct radial position....just tighten the set screw !!

I will pick up this project again shortly...just toooo much other going on now !

Keep up the good work, as I sure many are watching, and waiting. It appears that for the foresaable future, all the advancement in high output diodes will be with the multimode types. optical correction appears to be the only hope for HO and small spot size.

Unfortunately....I think you are correct.

And...even Anamorphic prism's MAY have TOO much power loss....and cylindrical lenses MAY be demanded ??? Dunno ???
Cylindericals are much more a PITA to align and secure....but...BOY...they work great !!! as seen with the " Dragon's Head " build.

Cylinderical optic COULD be used.....just as the Anamorphic prism's are currently placed in the Adaptive Optic EZ POC unit.
I bet the cost would be about the same for the optics !! The unit would likely be longer, but sport less diameter....and the alignment would be much more demanding !!...BUT....the optic losses would be lower !!!

I have optics to experiment....just....not the Green for the 1W Green !!!!
AND...It looks....like the 3.5W 445 will also need corrective/adaptive optics (Glasses) !!!
Higher power==> Larger emitter size ==> Greater divergence...Just NO Free Lunch in the World of Optics !!

At the end of the day....It comes down to what is acceptable to each HH user...20 to 50 feet (6 to 16M) away from the HH unit.....

If you want no bar, that far...A set of glasses you will need....indeed !!
So sad...Too Bad....that is JUST the parallel Universe we live in !! HaHa
