Ok after debating which route to take for a high output lens I decided to buy a bare 405-g2 lens and do the mod myself. 1/4 drill for the inside of the aixiz lens nut, and 1/4 in OD copper pipe with thin walls for a spacer. Everything fit perfectly and it works but... here is the spot: (1st pic without flash, 2nd & 3rd pic with flash)

The "wings" are so prevalent and the spot is much "dirtier" than the aixiz 3 element lens. Heres the big problem though, I believe that the wings (non-focused laser light) are so big that it takes away power from the actual spot, and from my own burning tests, it burns no better than aixiz. though the aixiz doesnt burn as well when focused to infinity, but the aixiz can focus to a smaller point and then it burns much much better than this can.
I know this isnt jayrobs 405-g1 but his test show that they are pretty much the same. I wonder why i cant focus to a small dot (0.1mm or less) with the 405-g2 and still burn. I get the feeling so much energy is lost in those wings when focused that small.

Anyone with thoughts, comments, answers????

You sure you got the lens the right way.? The G1/G2 has to site very close to the diode.

Also what diode are you using.? 405nm or 445nm.?

The G1/G2 will focus Great with a 405nm diode but with the 445nm diode it is pretty bad. I cant remember the exact Divergence of my G1 with my 2W but its like 1 inch at Around 10 - 15 Feet.

Need more info to help further. Got a Picture of the Lens Assembly.

Also What iam think is the lens could have got damaged. Maybe you touched the lens with your hand by accident. Dust got on it etc.

lens was never touched by my hands, tweezers only. I have the round part of the lens facing the diode, and yes it is damn close to it... im thinking between 2-3mm from the diode window. and this is a 405 12x diode. Also, what do you recomend as a cleaning solution for the lens, if i use a microfiber q-tip (made for cleaning lens) with a little bit of denatured alcohol, is that safe for the AR coating?

ok... ALOT better now. still have the wings but not as pronounced. Aixiz lens are still cleaner but dang this thing burns like hell... i now have burn marks on my fingers...stupid small focus rings!

yeah, the g-1 and g-2 spots are pretty bad, I only really use them for burning or LPM tests to show maximum powers

Wanna make me one?

same price as the g-1 i thought? which is about as cheap as it's gonna get, jay doesnt make much money assembling the lenses for all the machining/work he puts into making it

I dont plan on selling these but i buy the lens for like 28bucks... aixiz lens nut was from a lens that got scratched up but they do sell 10 of them for 16 something. thats 1.70 cents each combined with the tube (which requires no machining) I got a high output lens for around 34 bucks... and btw the only "machining" required is drilling the aixiz nut with a 1/4 in. drill which is a snap for me cuz i have drill press.

@bwhollen if you want, just provide me the parts and i will do it for you. otherwise i'd have to charge you 5 bucks extra for labor and gas to go to home depot. still cheap probably 40.

This is only for him cuz he lives in my city. i dont plan on selling these.

Just so you all know, the 405-G-1/2 lenses are really only beneficial with single mode diodes.
The reason this is is that the lens collects much more of the light straight from the diode for maximum power.
You won't notice a significant difference in power when using it with >500mW lasers. The extra 25% at Class IV doesn't make a significant difference in apparent burning power.

Save the 405-G-2 for a 12X 405nm. It will make more improvement there and with virtually no sacrifice of beam quality.
