Why do people insist on showing their ignorance?

I just don't understand why people have to make asses of themselves. I just received another response on the 808nm 5000mW YouTube video telling me the 5W laser is not 5W just because they looked at the video. I peepee slapped him but I guess ignorance is the norm.

Don't feel too bad - I get plenty of stupid replies on my laser videos too....in fact most ALL of my vids - even the non-laser ones.

Re: Why do people insist on showing their ignoranc

Here's another I just got yesterday:

"u cant get a 1000mw laser beam the most power full is 250mw".
It was posted on my 532nm video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOHo1fkky_s

I realize ignorance isn't just limited to coherent light. Day to day living reveals mass ignorance in people but they have no choice as it is a part of their existence. When it comes to something like lasers they do have a choice whether to show it or not. But, like a moth to a flame, they just cannot help it.

I was brought up to keep my mouth shut if I didn't know something about a subject. By keeping the mouth closed the ears are then free to learn from those who have the knowledge.

Re: Why do people insist on showing their ignoranc

Free energy is the same, some people still believe hooking a motor to a generator will work, and if someone tries to tell them wrong, they back it up with some stupid website explaining how it works etc etc .

Its mainly because those people haven't seen such a thing in their life. if I bought a blue laser and took it to school (Which I would never take any laser to school, considering the amount of people there that have no clue of the dangers), the response would probably be "how did you convert the red to blue, can you use blue plastic onfront?"

Its probably just another one of the people that have been sucked in by wicked lasers. if they got themselves into the world records, its gonna take a long time to get it out of peoples heads.

Just my .2c (Probably more like .01c with the exchange rates now :/)

People who ask a question such as, "How did you convert red to blue?" are actually much better off as they have placed themselves in a position to learn thus alleviating the ignorance. The guy on the video discussion makes a bold statement of fact. Clearly his statement absurd. Keep mouth closed and ears open. He's not the only one. I see it time and again on my videos so it must run rampant.

Thats true, tho I would think they would think of it more as not a learning opportunity, and more "how can i do i to my laser too" kinda thing.

I do agree that his statement was very blunt though, someone just needs to crawl out from underneath the wicked lasers boulder and have a read around abit more :p

If there is a chance to comment, according my 'research', there will be about 25-40% negative comments...

Thats how we work, .. or something like that :)

Perhaps his range of thinking is limited to handhelds?... no, we can exceed that easilly...

WL handhelds, then.

Re: Why do people insist on showing their ignoranc

People either seem to vastly underestimate or overestimate laser power and what that power can or cannot do. I think someone said something to the effect of "be careful or you'll burn a hole thru your wall and hit your neighbor's house" on one of my CO2 laser vids....and then I replied that way more than 20 watts would be needed to accomplish such a feat, and even then it would depend on controlling the divergence.

Sadly most people seem to be woefully ignorant of lasers in general; admittedly I would have had to count myself among them before I started my job at that laser machine shop.

This is why I don't go to youtube - - - I got dopes around me enough :(

I do find that many people I talk to here never took Chem or Phys in high school and react to science like a wild animal to fire.

Except for them running away, they usually stay and continue to insist they are right :p

FrothyChimp, I have trained myself not to look below the video player...

... Especially during the election season. Once or twice, I got a glimpse of a few comments and I nearly lost my mind.

if i were to post things on youtube, i would make sure to disable comments on everything... if its possible. i havent posted anything yet, but i see some that you cant comment on.

youtube is a pool of brown, with some neat videos here n there. although i use it less and less because they delete videos often. many times i will look for a video i know exists, and should or has been on there, and will never find it.

Re: Why do people insist on showing their ignoranc

I just got an interesting one on one of my videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuF4YsvAmZc

(replying to some guy saying he wanted to go to MIT)
forget it kid
think about chicks first not school,
besides, you don't want to be a nerd like this guy, he probably makes robotic vibrators for his boyfriend

I had a chuckle as I clicked the 'Remove' button.
