SO with it getting closer and closer to the 4th of July, and my initial post being " what are my options for a burning laser that can light fireworks, well now I have 2 lasers a red and a blue...Now I just need a focused 100W incandescent lightbulb and I'll have a patriotic firework light show. :p

At any rate heres the videos, the first is the red laser which is calculated at "125mw" based off stoneteks graph for the phr-805 at 300mA lighting a smoker from probably 6in away.

Next up is the quick rigged 445 from survival laser, with a DTR blue diode running at most likely 1W at pretty much 6in away also, and If you notice near the end my hand seem to get a little hot from some careless action on my part.

Also as a safety disclaimer the blue laser was shot with me wearing a pair of eagle safety glasses just because that thing is so darned bright, as for the red laser...I don't have any glasses for it yet.

Private use of fireworks isn't legal in (most of?) USA. It just doesn't seem to stop people.

Technicaly fireworks are Illegal in 48 of the 50 satates (did a final on them in 12th grade got an A+) but in the legality case, Its mostly for class 1 fireworks, basicly anything that flys or has a report excluding snappers or party poppers, But like Haloblu said it doesn't stop people from buying them but in most cases as long as you are over 18 and shoot them off in the country side where theres minimal home/ property damage aside from maybe a feild catching on fire most law enforcement just let it go, mostly because on the 4th...they are being security for the actual 4th shows, plus theres about 20 different people all over the same contry side shooting them off.

Truthfuly fireworks shouldn't be illegal since most of the problems with them consist of irresponsible or naive parents, who let there "smart level headed 12yr" play with mortar shells and M-80's with minimal or without supervison and the kid gets severaly hurt, and the drunks and high school kids doing really stupid stuff like rocket wars and somebody getting hurt, its kind a like the whole laser thing in the hands of responsible people like us, they are perfectly fine and no-one has a problem with us or the lasers, and at most the on lookers are concerned about the optical safety, but you give a 15yr a 1W and let them take it to school or shine the laser at planes/ drivers/ etc then people freak out about the lasers and they become a bad thing.

The issue is, you can't even buy them here. :( Firework stores don't exist anymore.

Just a theory... occured to me just now when I read the thread...

When there ARE fireworks, it is inevitable that there will be accidents, stupid stunts, injuries, fires...

... some of them very severe ... remember "O'Leary's Cow?":
Great Chicago Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So if there is 1 day out of the year (4 July) when the populace "goes nutz" with fireworks, perhaps there is/was a fear that fire departments and emergency responders could become overloaded... probably a case of overreaction by politicians... they just don't want the headache, and maybe lobbyists got to them.

Maybe that is PART of the reason they were illegalized.

Personally, I don't care much. I used to enjoy them when I was a kid. Now I am starting to get old and crabby, and hate the noise. Shrug.

I used to enjoy Halloween, too. I remember trick - or - treating when I was a kid in west Texas. Then ... a few stories of tampered boobytrapped candy, razors in apples, and you NEVER see trick or treaters anymore.
:cryyy:

I was SO looking forward to putting fried eggs and beer into those little paper bags in my old age.

There's a fireworks store about 3 miles from my house we always went to over the years. They have a backroom where they keep the "Good Stuff" :D

They are still open every year too. I just don't get into fireworks like I did when I was a little kid. And M-80s, bottle rockets, Saturn missiles, firecrackers, artillery shells, etc. draw a little too much attention in a populated city.

You got a point JB and I realize what you mean about age, I loved mesing around with firecrackers but now the only ones I buy are water dynamite (firecracer with extra wrapping and a water resistant wick light and drop in a pond whatch a flash feel a thud and repeat...not to mention the good stuff runs a little pricey and its always like oh yea this is gonna be awsome..ok..thats it...we're done...man that wasn't very long...

Kmor2004 / HaloBlu;

I've heard of people that "go fishin" that way. I think in some states it is illegal. I knew a guy once, when I was stationed in Massachusetts, that CLAIMED that him and his relatives "do it all the time". I can't remember what they said they used, modified M-80's / partial sticks of dynamite, etc., or something.

Supposedly, they light the incendiary and drop it in a pond or lake, then just collect all the DEAD (not stunned) fish when they float to the top.

=====

When I was in Hawaii, some local non-scrupulous individuals used to use kind of similar tricks to hunt Hawaiian Lobster at night. I HAVE seen these being done myself; I used to be a PADI instructor, and worked part time at a place called "Rainbow Divers" in Waipahu. I saw this being done while guiding / diving with tourists during night dives, or lobster hunting.

(I should scan some of my old U/W photos and post them into that "Photography" thread).

In Hawaii, the only LEGAL way to hunt lobster is by HAND (and you need thick gloves)... by cornering and grabbing them.

(1) They would scuba to the mouth of a "lobster hole", basically a "puka" or small cave left over from an old "lava tube"... and open a bottle of bleach, and shove it in with a stick. The bleach bottle was usually mounted on the end of a broom handle. The bleach more-or-less instantly killed the lobster (AND other fish, AND any coral that was still living...).

(2) Hawaiian Spiny Lobsters do not have claws... they only have spines ALL OVER their bodies, but especially their backs, for self defense. If something grabs them they start "bending" back and forth very rapidly, stabbing whatever... the spines can break off... I've had a few go thru my glove into my hand and break off. It hurts / burns / itches for a while.

ANYWAY... the 2nd (illegal) cheat is to shove a mop into a lobster hole, pin the lobster down, it gets it's spines caught in the mop, and you pull the lobster off the mop and shove it into your bag (a kind of mesh bag, metal loop at the mouth, closes / latches). At least this method only took the 1 lobster, and didn't kill everything else in the area.

-----
The locals do this and sell Hawaiin Lobster to tourists at the tourist traps. Hawaiin Lobster *IS* very delicious... very sweet.

Nope the water dynamite won't exactly work for fishing, I've dropped it in our lake just because it was teh closest body of water and the wick burns entirely too fast to be the same as old school dynamite fishing, as far as getting lucky and having one get too close to a curious fish and stun them, maybe.

Not advertising that style of fishing nor is my reference anywhere near that....literaly they are the size of firecrackers, they just switched to a water resistant wick instead of the paper gun powder wicks, literally it takes about 10 of them to bust open a plastic 5gal bucket one at a time...

That's an interesting use for a laser. Still not sure if I like it or not. I'm worried about the possibility of a high power beam passing beyond your focal point and off to who knows where.
In your video that blue beam was close to bouncing off windows for uncontrolled reflections...
But kudos for the posting !
