Last night I created my first transmission hologram of some marbles and other glass trinkets. The hologram film appears clear until shining an unfocused laser through it. You can see it's possible to adjust the focus at points within the hologram.

Very nice!

I've always been fascinated by holograms. I'd love to be able to do something like that.

Oh wow, that came out beautifully!

Perhaps you might be able to write up a full thread of how-to's with links to your materials sources. I'm especially curious about where you got the holographic film and developer.

Creating the hologram was much easier than I imagined.

To create the transmission hologram a very simple work area was created:
TransmissionHologramTable.jpg

Objects being holo'd rest in front of a very high resolution film plate. Using light from my unfocused laser (75mW) an exposure of 1 second was all that was required. No lenses necessary. Developing the film is not difficult, though it's a bit nasty and must be done in the dark. Bubblewrap under the board helps with vibrations and I did the work at 3am to assure a vibration free area.

I purchased the kit from Integraf:

No WAY! That is SO SICK!! I'm doing this now. Seriously, if you made an in-depth thread on the subject, that would be the coolest thing ever. can it be done with a 445nm? And... this is going to sound dumb but... how exactly does it work? I am familiar with the "scratch and light" ones, but ive never seen one done like this...

Ooh, nice! Those of us who don't need a laser (all of us? haha) it seems to be much cheaper to just get the developer kit ($17) and some film plates ($24 and up). Total of $41 isn't bad at all! I'm going to have to get some soon as I can afford it.

PFG-03C emulsion may work for 445nm. Most of the hologram films are red or green sensitive. Otherwise there's no reason you could not use a 445nm laser.

whaaaaaaaaat!?!?!!! *#&%@!?%! I WANT TO DO THAT in my doorway!!!

THat is sick my friend, and I am a little drunk tonight so I'm not messing with my lasers tonight but that was insanely cool! +:beer::beer:

Well done... looks amazing...:gj:
And thanks for the supply link...

I was into holography back in Highschool.. My 3 or 4mw HeNe that I built from surplus stock from MWK Industries, took 20-50 minutes to expose a sheet, LOL..

For that, I had to mount everything on a sheet of plywood, rest that on an innertube, sitting in a sandbox on the concrete slab in my garage!! LOL

Still dont think I ever came out with any transmission holograms that didnt have the woodgrain effect.. (a vibration of 1/10 wavelength or more will cause this)

Now that we have these wonderfully high powered laser diodes at our disposal (cheap) I'm seriously considering getting back into it.. I owned a photography studio for years, and love working with B&W film, and prints in a darkroom, so I figure this should be pretty easy to get back into.. I have a *ton* of equipment for processing up to 4X5 sheet film.. I guess I just need to read up again on how to modify my setup for a LD, and get ahold of the film, and chemistry...

Congrats on the hologram.. Thats really quite nice looking.. Much better than I ever came up with like 18 years ago.. :)

Wow very cool, I don't think I have seen any one here do this yet so kudos to you and +2 :gj:

This is a much simpler method than the old way of using a couple mirrors and bouncing the beam around, but now you need to illuminate the holograph with coherent light to see it.

I think with the other method only regular light was needed to make the holograph visible

Splitting the laser beam, then exposing one feed onto the film, and the other beam onto the items to be holographed, is what I tried to do.. AFAIR (As far as I remember) that was "reflection" holography.. Transmission was easier, as it didnt require all the optics, but you could only really image clear / semi-transparant objects..

Again, this is all info I'm dragging up from a hobby I had almost two decades ago..

Still, I'm so going to try this.. What fun :D

pretty co0l,looks like field of lava. with a little 589 or 593.5nm mixed in would be epic
