Goddamn i KNOW that! I even got a 3-phase power converter just for that thing. Now what? I spent $200 on that damn converter for what? Nothing.

Sam, that fucking bastard. He emailed me 3 days ago, and told me if i still wanted it, i could have it. I told him i did, and he never got back to me. Now i see this! What... the... fuck.

HEY Spyderz, you can PM Gooey Gus & ask HIM if he wants to buy that 3/phase converter. It would be better than just having it laying around doin' nothin' ;) I feel your pain, man, of being promised something & then having it pulled from you at the last minute. It's happened to me before & it sucks, but the fault lies with "SAM" NOT Gooey Gus. "SAM" is the person that promised one item to two people. Gooey Gus had nothing to do with it. Just my opinion :) rob :cool:

SAM is just a middle man. I contacted Sam a few months ago and and he got me in contact with a physics professor at the university, who turned out to be another sort of middle man. Finally this weekend I got in contact with the professor who is going to help me with shipping. I've been on this one for a looooooooooooong time.

What sort of converter did you get? To run this you'll probably need a 7.5hp 3-phase motor, along with a solid state converter (these are the box things that are usually around 200) to get the motor started and add to efficiency, this setup would be the real deal, full rotary phase converter.  You cant run the laser on solid state alone for very long because it will more than likely kill the converter.

I also want to add that these lasers will need some work. Like I said, it's not just a plug in and go sort of thing. They have been out of commission for a while and are probably high pressure, and who knows what other kind of problems they have. I was originally contacted and told they were 'scrap, for parts'. I'm just taking a chance on hoping that I can get them to fire up, with a little work.

You'll also need a commercial address to have them dropped off to, unless you want to pay an additional 100 dollar charge on top of your shipping to bring it to a residential.

BTW they still have the SP 164 head available as far as I know. I just took the 165 w/ 265 PSU.

I can confirm this as well. You can even check the archives at alt.laser to see how long ago GooeyGus started working on this. Sam just got out of the loop. Sorry you spent money on a shadow.

If I had 220V in the garage, I would buy this off of you. There are LOTS of really great deals on eBay that I have to pass up because I don't have 220V (especially without 3-phase).

There was a brand new unit like this, in Maine, that went for $16 (of course the shipping WAS several hundred like this one).

Oh man, we have 220V all over here in Europe.Too bad we haven't got the deals. :-/ If only I would find something like this anywhere in my country :D

I'd see if you can get that 164 head if you're really dead set on getting a project. The PSU is the least of your worries. You can build one that will run single phase 240.

To be perfectly honest, you'd probably be better off buying a working set off ebay. If you have the money rounded up right now, there's an HGM5 thats posted on ebay that will do ~4 watts if it's in good shape. The guy only wants $995 buy it now, comes with the PSU and everything, and it works. The actual bid is substantially lower than $995. If you can nab it for, lets say 6 or 7 hundred bucks thats a steal of a deal.

Even though this PSU/head set from the university may only cost 300 or so for shipping, I guarantee by the time you have a good working laser you're going to be in over 4 figures and spend MANY hours working on it.

If I was looking for a working argon, let alone my first argon, I would steer very clear of this. For the money you'd be spending on SHIPPING, you can buy an entire air cooled head and PSU on ebay. I already have a few air-cooled argons sitting around, and I'm not looking for a perfectly functional laser. I want a project :)

Dr. Rehse put me in contact with another professor who is actually in charge of shipping them out, this was a couple weeks ago. So I wouldn't be surprised if Dr. Rehse doesn't know if they're gone or not, since he was just in charge of 'getting the word out'.

This other professor was out of the office all last week, but e-mailed me to let me know he would be contacting me on monday so I could pay for shipping and let him know how I want them shipped. As far as I know, this is whats going on.
