It's now November, and getting cold and dark.. at least for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. This time of the year the light toys become more appealing. So I decided to put this video collection together.

Here's the laser, <= 100mW red pocket mini

(here's my review of this DIY laser:http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/review-pocket-mini-red-68231.html)

Something a little different than cutting electrical tape. Here I'm severing a section of fabric.. part of an umbrella

Note how clean the cut is, here's a closeup:

Burning through a CD case. Note the nice splash pattern after burn through:

Here's a closeup of the CD case afterwards:

Igniting a safety match from ~1 yard.

Match head after immolation:

Etching a leather sack.

After being lightly burned, the leather appears to have been attacked by an small boring insect:

Scoring a $10.00 landline phone ..

The phone after attack. Textured grip now

I didn't include popping balloons, or lighting cigarettes.. both of which are possible. My magnificent video of me lighting a removed was deleted :(

So, even a lowly 1/10 watt laser pointer is capable of some nasty burning.

Do you know of the lowest output that is capable of burning?

Lowest power capable of buring?

I'd say what I'm using, 1/10 watt - 100mW. If you're really interested in scorching and cauterizing stuff the more the better of course - I'd recommend 250mW (1/4 watt), minimum, if so. And safety glasses!

However, if the laser is focused perfectly, all the way down to ~25mW (1/40 watt) it's possible to smoke black plastic and light a blackened match up close. Same thing with 100mW, focus must be perfect to burn.

To elaborate on the above post regarding the 25mW burning....a good way to help low power lasers along on the road to thermal experiments is to take apart a dvd drive, and take out the collimating lens facing upwards at the entrance to the optical drive. Put that in the way of your beam as an extra collimating lens right in front of what you want to burn, and it will make the laser beam converge sharply to a point which will achieve that perfect focus he talked about.

Or you could just get a 500mW 405nm laser and go to town....but with safety glasses!!!! You wanna be able to see them photons for a long time, not just for a few seconds.

I +rep you for doing everything I like to do without my wife's arm coming into the frame and slapping you.:na:

Nice burn vids man. That's some good burn from such a tiny laser. I love using single element lenses for my close range burns because I love the focus I get off them. The other day I had my 1W 638nm in a tripod and I was trying to get a shot of the beam leaving the lens and didn't realize that when I turned it slightly it ended up hitting my chair and somehow had an extreme focus. Well I realized it hit my chair when my room filled up with smoke and now I have a hole clear through the back of my chair and some descent scorch marks around the hole because it briefly caught fire in the process of burning through LOL.

I +rep you for doing everything I like to do without my wife's arm coming into the frame and slapping you.:na:

LOL, sucks bro you can't even burn things sheesh.

Any more mention of burning me with lasers will result in a permaban :D

Please burn "stuff" instead, he's the evil one.

Hmm, didn't even consider that haha.

OK, burn "objects" instead :D

Thanks buddy but you are half right.I can be evil:eg: LOL

Edit: To the OP nice videos of what a 100mw can do. Good job.

Three more videos

Three bore holes through CD case, bottom to top. First only shimmering reflections are seen right the case as laser burns through.. after 5-10 seconds glowing red dot appears left side of case, followed by the laser beam as cd case is punctured.

Lighting safety matches, laser about 3 feet away. Much time spent adjusting the focus.. eventually got those matches lit.

From four feet seems to be the furthest I can reliably ignite a safety match... from 5 feet 1 out half dozen attempts.
