some beams (including my new 473)

I got a new toy from ionlaser555, a lab 473 with a fair amount of oomph.

I powered it up tonight and laid out my other lasers and some mirrors and got some interesting results. I've been waiting for a new lens to arrive but since this setup worked so well tonight I decided to do some photos now.

The 473 and my 532 portable compete for brightness and wash the room with a turquoise green colour.


Switch on my 445 portable and as usual, it steals the show. A shift of camera angle and me standing holding a black beamstop helped reduce some of the blue intensity, though.


Then I got up close and personal.


Again.



The setup was a mirror behind the camera and then a mirror again that you can see, creating a "Z" shape in the beams.

I'm not as blown away with the colour of 473 as some are, to be honest I could take it or leave it. I think DPSS yellow/s are still my true love.

:kewlpics: However, I hope you were wearing goggles at that angel to the beam.

Well, I was, but the camera wasn't. I have an OD7 pair of ARG goggles that block all the lasers except the red one and they were on my head when I was manoeuvring close to the beams.

BTW - What is the source your 635nm beam?

The first photo is my favorite as the mirror is nicely exposed. How much power does your 473nm put out? I have a 30mw and 100mw and I have to disagree with you as it is my favorite color, and I do own a 593.5 and a few 589's. At least to me when I am using my 473's with other color lasers, it stands out so nicely.

Bruce you are right in that the mirror is properly exposed in the first pic. The problem I've had is the kit lens on my Sony camera is really hit and miss. At the long end the sharpness in the corners is woeful and it's quite susceptible to glare/bad contrast. I've just got my 35mm f/1.8 which after a lot of research is what I wanted to buy. Thankfully there is a fast 35 available on the Sony system whereas as far as I know the Canon and Nikon system fast 35s are very expensive, professional grade lenses. Hopefully now I have it I'll be able to take better photos and not be stuck with slow apertures and high ISOs all the time (I hate lugging around tripods).

My 473 I bought off here and the guy said it puts out around 150mW, I think. It's certainly pretty beefy and if I put my finger in front it stings after a few seconds. It amazes me how cheap 473 lab lasers are, sure the cover is missing off mine and it needs a separate 5mW power supply (PC power supply I've used) for modulation but just over £100 for stable, constant on 150mW+ of 473?! Why can't we get deals like that for 589, even half that of 589 in a lab would be sweet!

Bowtieguy: the red is a 635nm pen from laserbtb (I bought it off gismo and its metered at around 30mW I think). It's a better colour to me than 650, I had one which died (same host, these are very hit and miss from laserbtb and unfortunately I got a crap one) but you need oodles more power just to see 650 so I never bothered replacing.

I am using the Nikon lens (18mmto 55mm)that came with my Nikon D5200. I also using a Rokinon 8mm lens, and have a telephoto Nikon zoom for it. For my needs these lenses are fine for my needs and my wallet. As far as lugging a tripod around, every one of my laser shots is using a tripod or having the camera resting on something. In the past month, I have been to NYC 3 times to photograph the sites in the very early AM lugging my tripod around the streets of NYC in freezing temperatures. But to me it is totally worth it as the quality of my shots are very high and I have great photos to last me forever.

I use a tripod in the house for most of my laser shots, absolutely. Most of the above were done at 2-6 seconds. I try to use my tripod outside sometimes, but I think I'm disillusioned because it's a very cheap flimsy one. If I'm going to lug one around I might as well just buy a decent one. That is after a 589 and some carbon filament bulbs...
