I remember hearing from somewhere that if you use a high powered laser on a card reader lock such as shown below it can cause damage to the sensor, even being able to trick into having it open the locked door!

But again, I only heard this from somewhere. So whether if this is true or not is just as much as a guess, but either way its probably best you do not do this since mostly government buildings/schools use this tech..

Yea, I highly doubt this would work on a card reader, we have them at work. I have a (paid) intern spot for a government agency, it's pretty sweet.

I did it once with my opto 150. Its kinda hard to do though. Its has got to be right on the sensor.

I ordered my first laser, a green one, to see if I can turn off the street light for a moment. I went outside this afternoon to see it the lights on my street were on one main switch but luckily all the lights came on seperately 3-5 mins of each other.
it is wnw of my house so I should be able to get to the sensor with the laser. It's a really old light. It's been there since I moved here about 13 years ago and the power company just changed it to an "orange" light that invades both my front and backyard. I just think it would be a bit of fun to see if the neighbor came out if I can turn if off for a few minutes.
Anyone have advice for the sensor? It's about 120ft away and I can't see the top of the light clearly enough from the ground to see where the sensor is. I don't want to have to walk on some one else's yard to see the sensor. Obviously if I can access it from my house I won't be able to pull this little trick. I will have to use my video camera from a window on the top story to see if I can locate the sensor.

in most cases the sensor is just above the light head but it's window only faces one direction and is about 1/2" dia or smaller. in some cases like here the sensor is on top and half way down the support arm that is holding up the light head, the window still only faces one direction.

how do u know where the sensor is, even more at that distance?

I used to do this same thing with a 5mW red 15 years ago.. The sensors here are also in the side and must be hit just right with lower power lasers.

Another sensor that will trip is a motion sensor for an alarm or motion lights you have outside the house. Ive tripped these with as little as 100mW of 405nm

WARNING! Do not aim your blurays at a banks motion sensor after closing ;)

Oh now I have to try this bank thing!

LOL, I said do NOT!!... Something tells me there is going to be a change in the alarm installation industry, possibly by way of an opaque cover on the motion sensors... Call it a hunch...

The old ones were mercury vapor. They only get 30-40lm/W.
The new ones are high pressure sodium. They get 80-100lm/W

Hmmm... Of course I had to try this....
I have IR motion sensors in the Shop and I can't get them
to trigger with a 120mw 405nm Laser... whether tightly focused
or spread beam...
I tried the outside light sensor as well.... still NADA....

When I used to do it with my HeNe I was upstairs lasing out a second story window directly into the sensor.
