A bare hene tube is something I feel I want to get. Is it safe to look at?

Yeah its perfectly safe to look at. The tube is bright at its core but it drops off quick. Its about the same as looking into an incandescent flash light. Even the beam is safe to look at since its around 1 mW.

The only real danger of an exposed tube is the exposed high voltage connections. On a small tube like this it isn't deadly but it sure hurts like all hell.

Can confirm, the shock from a running HeNe tube isn't any fun.
