Default Radim's laser painting

Hi fellow laserists,

I have received a very nice feedback with many, many reps from you (thanks again) in Enchanted Beams Thread (recommended to subscribe) with requests for more of my artwork to be shared. Maybe it's time to make a thread for this stuff to keep it at one place.

I'll put here the pics for your enjoyment. And when I experience something special during my night rides and walks in the forest with lasers and camera, I'll share the story together with photo posted as well.
I'll be happy for your feedback, opinions, feelings, comments, tips, critics etc. Follow up discusion is very warm welcomed.

Enjoy...

To begin with - my latest shot:

When laser touches a tree its soul becomes visible

(real photo, no computer graphics, just laserpainting & a bit of moonlight, for higher resolution click the image)

And here is the first artwork ever I'm proud of (shared in above mentioned thread already, I just wish to have it here as well):

The Laser Sun

It's a day at night in the forest. The sun is shining on the sky – is it real or is it not? What is real? What is dream? The souls of the trees, the souls of the light? The esence of reality is surreal… Many words all spoken by single picture…

About

Yes, it‘s a real photo, no computer graphics, just pure laser painting of my style. Four high powered lasers were used for this photo including starring 589 nm "Yellowie" with 2X beam expander optics.
Warning: Proper eye safety wear and strictly following laser safety protocol are absolutely necessary during composition setup and exposure of photos like this one.

Behind the scene (this story is written exclusively for LPF )

It was a bit sad that evening at the beginning, I've had clear idea about the photo and everything. I supposed to used 532 nm 800+ mW (I call him "The First"). I was getting everythig ready, unlocked and tried to switch him on. No emission... Ok, let's change the batts. Nothing. Another pair. Nope. Again. Damn it. It was dead. Bad for start and it made me very sad. But why to return home, when I have four other lasers with me? I prepared the scene, found the right place for camera, composition, alignment of 589 nm (I still do not have these little tripods - so I use various objects to put it on - the harder way ), composition adjustment and... First trial.

...

During the exposure in normally calm and quiet forest I heard him nearby... To me well known alfa male deer. For those who read my intro - he has not been shot yet as I meet him from time to time, when riding my mountain bike and even once during laser painting. Well, he was not that far from me to make me feel comfortable as I have had all lasers, optics, camera tripod and all necesary accessories out of backpack and it takes a lot of time to get everything packed and fitted inside... Usually I'm very confident being in forest at night, but based on my prior experience I'm always a bit nervous with this beast.

Well, the exposure was done and camera was taking its time to process the photo. I was preparing for next shot and he was still there making his typical noises towards me. I saw his bright red eyes reflected from my head 1 700 lumen flashlight. It was him, I recognize him only by his voice, but I even barely saw him. In addition he is the only one not scared when I do some loud counter noise at him like clamp, shout etc... This confirmed me he is my well known "friend" I met in the last summer first time... And he was slowly approaching...

"Click!"
Photo processed. Checked: "Ok, I need to adjust the scene to get what I came for." Deer is still shouting at me. Me, just for sure, keeping some laser handy. Adjust yellow laser, composition, yellow laser composition... A lot of walking. Still deer noises of anger... Still coming closer and being more and more loud... I shot a flash of laser in the area where he was to keep him far (not hitting him of course - I could see where he was, just flash of bright light of laser light nearby would be sufficiend to keep him away, I was hoping). Anyway, I was quickly ready with scene as I got some little experience already and it was the time for a second shot. Last check of composition and camera settings. Mobile phone with DSLR IR Remote app ready and here we go: Illuminate focus area, tap, focus - ok and light off before exposure starts. Now it was time to be creative... The deer still there and me walking in darkness in not really easy terrain illuminated just by 589 nm beam with laser in hand and laser glasses, laserpainting the forest.

It took five minutes and 2 seconds. After exposure I told myself this one has to be OK as the deer was becoming very annoying. I'm really affraid the moment, when he will not be scared by laser anymore - I do not have that heart to hit him directly, but what if? How would I defense myself? I have had just bare hands, lasers and sccissors in backpack. Not that huge antlers as him to stand as equal to equal in case of entering unitntended fight. So it was time to leave. However no attack occured, but I was exhausted from still paying attention to everything - exposure time, laser light emitted on objects, laser safety, the deer, not hitting the camera accidentaly, not slip or injure myself, not crossing the 589 nm beam with any part of my body and to be fully creative... I secured the lasers and was packing everything to leave when the camera proccessed the picture finally - quick check: "Wow, this is it!"

During my excitement from the photo the deer was probably bored of me and dissappeared. I did not even noticed him leaving as I forgot to pay attention to him. Anyway i knew, that other photos taken that evening would be just additional, so I got on my bike and followed the snowy and icy path through the forest back. I was happy with the shot stored at my SD card and the last mission was to get home safely...

And back home, after the lasers were stabilised with temperatures to prevent condensing of moisture and thermal shock. I took a look at the dead 532 nm. I put the batteries in (all were fully charged of course and I even measured the voltage), pointed the laser out of the window to infinity and - nice green beam slices the sky in full power again! Oh, amazing! That evening I was very happy! The laser is still alive, I took the photo above and I survived another encounter with the beast...

Thanks for reading and sorry for a bit longer post, ArcticDude, but this picture has a longer story to share.

Note: I really need to get something better than these Trustfire's 16340 (they were cheap and the best available to me at the moment when I got them). I realized that maybe they were too cold to deliver required current - in deed they delivered 0 or near mA as even the standby/emission indicator was not working - just at the beginning.

Even the first version of the quoted photo is nice, slightly different perspective and lighting... I might share it later.

Thank you. Usually I do not pulse them, but on this picture I just half pushed the on button (532 nm dots). How long it depends on distance of object (its color and shape as well, but mainly the distance) and camera settings, these vere about half second to one second - I estimate.

Thanks.

I have DSLR Sony Nex 7 with 18 - 55 mm lens, it is not optimal what I would imagine, but it was given to me 4-5 years ago.

Exposure time depends on many factors - here I have a lot of light polution from sodium lamps in city, which is not far enough to have clear sky (in human eye you barely notice it, but in shots it is visible). So the lighting is very important. In opening pic of this thread there was a full moon involved, so I kept the exposure longer as moonlight took over the sodium light (well you can photoshop this, but this is not my style, I like to capture "reality"). Also the settings of camera is a factor, but you can set it up for current light conditions, desired pic composition and you need to find some solution for this problem as at some level you get to fine adjustments, where if you adjust something to get better shot in one way, you got worse shot in the other way - so experience is needed. Anyway if you use RAW, what you see on camera display is not very relevant, just for estimate if exposure was good or not (if enough light was collected, focus, painted areas etc...).

The opening shot exposure was 10 minutes and 34 seconds.

Every pic takes a lot of steps and things to keep on mind because you need to get desired picture, you do not want to hit with laser somebody or something unintended and you operate in darkness in terrain which you have to remember when you move around the scene to paint it.

So I still learn to get it done correctly to be satisfied with my artwork. On every pic I take, I see some errors and things I would do differently when I look on them later. But these are part of learning process.

Default Re: Radim's laser painting

Here are the latest artworks. I got inspired also here on LPF by a Brucemir's art (here for example) and I incorporated a new optical element into my collection.
Enjoy...

The trees gathered to shoot their star in the sky

(no computer graphics, real photography, just laserpainting, for higher resolution click the image)

The Eye of the Forest

Have you ever wonder how forest sees itself?

(no computer graphics, real photography, just laserpainting, for higher resolution click the image)

Inspired by recent long philosophic talk walk in the forest with my friend I met after looong time, I had to got the sphere into my photography. It is a link to Plato's cave allegory through my eyes. Here the viewer is positioned partially into philosopher's point of view. According to my opinion everybody who asks, is a philosopher. However the esence of the sphere is much more deeper then described in this caption. I might uncover some layers later to approach a little bit more to complete understanding for those who stay tuned. Also a viewer might notice a laser grain (how I personally call it) in the details. It is not any defect of the photo itself, it is a property and beauty of coherent light of lasers. The sense of laser grain in my artwork is its direct link to the fascinating world of quantum mechanics present in our everyday life usually unnoticed. Another interesting effect making the image in sphere so abstract is separation of precise laser wavelenghts - colors - due to different refraction indices for different wavelengths in glass. The viewer might notice it as color separated images of trees in the sphere. The sense of this in my artwork is that although true "real" world is united, it might seem separated to us in some ways (like Einstein's general relativity theory and quantum mechanics for example).

And exclusively extra pic only for LPF - when experimenting with the sphere I noticed this effect:

It is a deep zoom in one of my test shots (so sorry for a poor quality). Look at the 405 nm laser paths. On the left you can notice a little rainbow! My 405 nm dildo is a true rainbow laser! Oh, not really - it is as monochromatic as lasers are. It's just a huge fluorescence of high energy 405 nm photons on wood. The sphere separated it from much brighter 405 nm laser light due to different refraction indices of glass for different wavelengths and brought it into rainbow. Note that energy of fluorescent light (which is not coherent laser light) is much lower and lays deeper bellow 405 nm and also there is a slight gap in the spectre missing part of blue - energy issue. I really love this effect. If I'm mistaken in some part of my explanation, let me know - I'm here on LPF to learn more as well.

Hey Radim,
Very nice pics! I like the first one the best. It almost looks like looking into the vortex of a laser projector, which I actually have been doing a lot recently.
And I see your use of a glass sphere in the second one. What size sphere is to get some perspective.

Thanks a lot, Brucemir. And thanks for inspiration as well.

I've found a local store which produces spheres from optical glass - not only for technical and decorative purposes but also for predicting the future. They have many sizes. The criteria for my selection were (ordered by importance):

1) Quality (higher = better)
2) Size (larger = better)
3) Weight (as I need to take it into my backpack together with camera, lasers and other stuff)
4) Price

So, there were 200 mm, 150 mm and 130 mm diameters in my mind and reasonable price range, but as 150 mm weights about 4.5 kg and 200 mm 10.5 kg it was clear to get the 150 mm.

Even this is quite heavy if you consider everything I take with me - I just feel it after a night in the forest. I usually ride full suspension bike to get there and find a scene, but in heavier terrain it is significant additional load on my back. I cannot imagine 10.5 kg sphere - but maybe next time I get it for some indoor shots or just to have it as the sphere is so amazing just by itself.

I got two stands for my sphere from the manufactures - one is from wood and the second from glass. It is a must have as if this has fallen it makes a crater in the floor.

Thank you very much, Encap.
Yes, they have to be different as I'm learning how to express myself and put my soul into the artwork. This seems to be the best way as I can capture the sense of my thoughts in the artwork and comment them in the caption for a viewer to show him/her my view of this abstract, however even without reading caption the viewer perceives it his/her own way. This is what I usually do when I go to exhibitions of abstract and contemporary art - enjoying all the emotions and thoughts from the particular artwork and then I read caption and see the artwork again and think about it in two stages - my perception and author's percepiton. This is why I love this kind of art.

EDIT: to all it is applicable - thank you guys for many reps and support. I very appreciate it and it motivates me to get more photos.

I have the wood stands for my three biggest spheres but only use them to store the spheres when not in use. If I used wood stands in my photography, they would be visible in the spheres and ruin the picture. I use only glass stands in mine. I have not had any accidents with them and I am very careful with them

I completely agree. I use them exactly like you. However, if I find three nice fixed points in the nature, why not to use them instead?

Sincerely investigate any of these three short quotes as new concepts and you've taken your first step into a larger world:

"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness..." - Max Planck. "Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real" - Neils Bohr. "What we call physical things and events do not exist independently of subjective experience..." - Deepak Chopra.

Each of these three rabbit holes go deep, ending up in the same place.

Useless troll fighting.

Yes itsn't it something how many members who have been on LPF a year or less have more rep points than members that have been on for years. It used to be ultra rare for anyone to have more reps than posts. Not anymore! SO my question is how does this happen. I used to be happy to get reps and build it up. Now it is a complete joke. I see some members with ZERO substance getting rep, points at a pace unheard of. This has nothing to do with Radims fine work, but something is not right. How do people get so man rep points so quickly? If anyone ever looks at any of my stuff, please do not rep me as it is now a meaningless stat and I will not return the rep. .Sorry to rant on your thread Radim, but something is not right
