Ok, seriously ..... W are power, J are power in time, so, 1J = 1W/Second.

But for the cavity, you're usually indicating the power for the duration of the pulse (this i meant with "depend" ), so, if the pulse is the usual 100 microseconds, that is the pulse lenght that is normally used with the SSY1 assemblies, it means 1W/100 microseconds, that if you convert it in W/S, give you 10 KW (this, ofcourse, if the pulse was 1 second long ..... and, basically also mean that the power at the hitting point is equivalent to 10 Kw, but ofcourse, being long only 100 microseconds, the transferred energy is 1W)

Anyway, i doubt that a SSY1 assembly can last enough time at 1J output, cause that unit was designed for work around 50 milliJoule max ..... maybe it can last 20 or 30 shots, before the q-switch die.

A different thing is, if like me, Anselmo removed the q-switch ..... in this case, the pulses are no more regulated in lenght, and can also get 1 millisecond pulse, with 1 J of output energy, pumping the lamp with 25 or 30 J for a millisecond ..... but still this shorten the life of the assembly, especially the lamp and rod faces .....

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

So many replies...duude ^^
I modified the SSY...now it has a better flashlamp (longer arc) and yes the q-switch is still mounted. I give the gun a 2 minute rest MINIMUM during the shots.
I push 120J thru the lamp! The puls is damn powerfull. Pierces a cola-can and plastic-bottles...no matter which color.

If you wanna call it a weapon....thats fine with me. You cant kill someone with a device like that, maybe if I hit someones head with it.

I got a pair of goggles for EVERY laser I make. I am not stupid and mistakes happen...no risk.

Portable Co2 laser rifle is up next btw.

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

Portabe CO2 sounds like a next logical step. As the overall efficiency of CO2 is better, it could deliver more bang from the same battery power source, but i doubt it would be all that compact. I suppose all CO2 tubes usable for a portable version would be RF excited, carrying in a lot of extra electronics.

I wonder how it would compare on the fun/cool factor though. CO2 could give you much more average power, but probably not the very short and sharp bursts the q-switched yag provides, so the results might be less spectacular to watch.

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

Real nice -- I started on a SSY-1 into a Klingon disruptor housing a year or so ago. I used a camera flash supply adding a voltage doubler to the circuit but got distracted by other projects.... so little time .........
Mine still has the Q switch and I actually observed air plasma (pop) with a 5" FL lens. I chipped the lens on both sides :-(

HMike

By the way -- I have OD6 wrap around goggles for mine. This isn't a public display "toy" unless you have extra goggles.

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

Well Mike...seems we have the same strange thoughts about weapons and lasers know what I mean? xD

I used a cylindrical plastic lens for the pics...sold all my YAG-lenses -___- could kick my ass for this. But I guess 350V makes the puls way to long for an airbreakdown.

Benm: It will lool better than the gun...cooler housing...a lil bit bigger...will be 60cm long. Will burn wood, paper, melt ice and all this on a distance...maybe not the same bursts of fire, but already got a gun which can do THIS trick right? CW is the goal! Sealed, HV-driven, 7W...

Wait for the CO2 rifle...the gun will look like a toy compared to the rifle ^^

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

Really nice work!
I have a SSY-1 with original triggerboard, too.

I don´t know a good one!

Thanks guy.

I used an ACG booster...you can get the schematics at anothercoilgunsite.com

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

I assume it just uses a spark gap for a trigger.

When fired, a small cap ***** some power into a little coil, which in turn creates a small spark. Because of this spark and the air breakdown, it allows a larger amount of current to flow, which then ***** the rest of the cap bank into the laser.

You can't really control it or anything, but it's a cheap and reliable way of switching high voltages. Can be a bit noisy though lol.

Nice work.

Do you mean for the trigger ?

Just get a single-use photocam (those ones that you use only once, you can ask any photographic lab for some in gift, cause when they're opened, are to throw away), and take out the circuit (remember to take away the battery first, and to discharge the big capacitor with an 1 Kohm resistor, cause 300 volts are not exactly a pleasure, and those cap can hold partial charge for days) ..... there's a very small trigger coil, on them, you can distinguish it easily, it can have 3 or 4 pins, but have always a contact or wire connected to the trigger electrode of the lamp (most of the times, just connected to the aluminium reflector of the lamp), and the other pins are connected to a little capacitor and to a high value resistor, usually around 4.7 mohm, and to a contact that become closed when the shutter move ..... just use this part, a 4.7 mohm resistor, a 220 nF 450V capacitor (or also just the capacitor and the resistor that are already on the circuit, with the trigger coil, if your voltage is not more high of the one written on the cap ) and any microswitch you have around (inlsulated, ofcourse ), connect the pin that originally is connected to the reflector to your trigger wire, and you have your trigger circuit almost for free

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

I used a small electrolytic cap...4.7µF @ 350V...gets charged parallel to the energy-storage. A SCR, connected to the pistol-trigger-mom-switch will discharge it thru a pulse-coil...

Re: Pulse Laser Gun

Nice project! I've never seen a Q-switched SSY-1 that compact before. Good job.
