So my day started pretty hectic...

Started with a Jiu Jitsu/Judo tournament (got guillotined in the semi-finals). Then a rugby match, then a barbecue. Where I proceeded to eat many pounds of juicy dead animal.

After that...there's THIS! You know, just trying to meter the wavelength of the ~609 line. Looks to be the Neon line at 609.6. Though it's very hard to tell... Will have to reattack this issue again tonight, or tomorrow.

Basically, you tune a micrometer on the side of the Verity, that turns a reflecting diffraction grating through a set of mirrors, to another slit in the back. So the light comes in one slit, the grating splits it up to its place in the spectrum, and it hit the back slit, and hits a photodiode that says "yes light" or "no light".

Now when there is light, the meter will start pinging depending on the power to the PCM. The more power, the more sensitive.

In this case, the 612nm light would still be telling the meter to go up, even down by the 609-609.6 range. So I had to get the measurements of how high at 607.5nm, and 608nm. I took measurements for when there was, and was not a ~609nm line present. Hence the grating to move in and out to check for the line. The difference between those two figures at 608nm was double, to even 2.5 times the difference at 607.5nm. It also reads 1.5nm low. So that puts this line right around 609.5nm. the Neon spectral line in question is 609.6nm. I think we nailed it ;)

im just building mah lasers. on a serious note though i am currently building a panel of white LEDs in the hopes of a large enough area and playing games on said LEDs. oh and two hosts coming from MrCrouse so thats gonna be fun!

My workbench is sort of empty right now :\ No money because I haven't sold drivers in a while (has taken a while to get the BBV4.1 up and running, but it is working now, just need buyers), and the phaser laser looks like it will have to take a back seat for a while... so no new builds or nuffin :(

Exactly. Projects, as in more than one. You can click the pictures for more pictures and
associated forum threads. First up, there is this new type of 12 pin diode I extracted from
a CD-RW/DVD drive:

Then of course there is "Big Red" which is increasing in wavelength as we speak and may
have to be renamed "Big Infra-Red" unless it mysteriously receives 7 or more votes by
midnight.



Next up is a diffraction grid calculator. It takes the distance from the grid to a target and
from the center to a first order line and outputs the wavelength. So far, the results seem to
be pretty accurate. I got a 658.5nm result from my little red pointer on the ghetto
spectrometer. The command line parser is still yet to be finished.

Then there is an IR photodiode detector which is still on the breadboard (no pictures yet).
It came straight off Sam's Laser FAQ. The photodiode came from an old VCR. It was an
optical sensor to detect when a tape is inserted. The plastic is IR-pass but blocks visible
light, so it's perfect for this purpose.
