Pictures of my DEAD $24 Newegg Sony 20x Red Diode

Here's some macro pics of my dead diode. Taken with my Casio Exilim EX-z850 with an additional convex lens held in front. Not too shabby for a tiny camera. It appears that the negative tiny gold wire was bent and therefore it is dead.

just because the bonding wire is bent doesnt necessarily mean that the chip is dead. as shabby as the pic may be, it looks that the wire is not broken. try to carefully bend up the portion touching the + bar with a tiny needle. just a tad.

Is the wire still connected to both the die and the pin, or has it broken in the middle or became disconnected from either?

If the connection to the die is still good you might be able to re-work it by either soldering it to its other half (in case of a broken wire) or into the pin directly if it came dislodged on that end. This is very tricky to do obviously, but an attempt should take that long and you have little to lose.

everything is still hooked up right, the diode just does not seem to lase. it draws 7.1 volts from my 2x CR123's and no current, and i cant see the 1.25 refrence voltage on the lm317t, but the circuit works with a dummy load...oh well.

It looks like someone grabbed the die with his greasy fingers. It could be that the chip itself is damaged by mechanic forces, or that the lasing output (assuming it is a microscopic transparent mirror) is broken.

You could try to take a needle supplied with the right voltage, and touch the top with it. If that doesn't work then the chip itself is broken.
