My 445nm diode has died. Time for a vivisection of this diode. I use a dremel for this. I know there is a special decan-tool but I don't have it.
It looks very coarse but the diode survived. :D
Pictures taken with a Canon 7D with a EF 100mm macro lens.

The pictures below are taken with the EF 100mm macro lens with a reversed EF 50mm lens in front. This will give me a magnification beyond 1:1.

Can anyone show the emitter ?

Wow! You must have a very steady hand, if that was me I would have cut the whole top of the diode off

Nicely done!

I've seen several of these through a loop, but my photography skillz are lacking

Being "old skool" I am amazed at the level of precision at such a small scale

Peace,
dave

Took this after a FAC experiment with a 445.
Dont have any of the bare emitter though.

And if there werent machines that could perform these tasks
there would be a surge in straight jacket sales :undecided:

Here is one that was lasing just fine when it went south, me thinks the current may have been on the high side

Very nice macro shots blord!

As for the emitter: Its actually the rectangular slab of material between the gold plate on top (with the wires going left) and the base 'plate' below it. The mirrors cannot be seen well in these pictures, but they are 'coated' on both small ends of that slab.

That is an awesome picture! Did the FAC do anything good for the beam?

@blord
Nice pics.
How did it die? Is it led, just no light at all or what? I don't think there are any visible signs of damage like in FP or PBD's pictures

It still works but no lase. Basically an expensive blue LED. No way I can repair this.

I tried it with a tiny piece of glass fiber optic.. This is the best I could come up with
even though the center is hollow.

It did have an affect on the beam but need to play with the idea more. That piece
is epoxied in place, but it is much more difficult to find the right position. Comparing
the position to a c-mount for example, there is nothing to rest it on. The point of
emission is in a very awkward spot and getting it to sit just right is nearly impossible.

I got it close, and could not even guess how much it is off the center line, the beam
on that LD exits slightly crooked..

It appears to help the shape, but doesnt appear to help divergence. If I take another
stab at it, will definitely post some pics.

Im getting anxious just looking at that pic, mind boggling how small this is without
the magnification :drunk:
