Didn't really know where to put this. Multimedia or Bluray forum.

So when I first joined the forum and was deciding on what my first laser would be, I, like many others, stumbled on Jayrobs huge thread on kits. So I did end up getting a C6 host kit but 1 thing I saw at the bottom of said thread was this little project

http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-glow-marble-mini-light-project-parts-44252.html

I have always wanted to try this but never had the time/parts to be bothered.

Last week I was wondering through a dollar store, I found an interesting mini light display and bought it.

Its a pretty nifty thing. Has 3 coloured LEDs (RGB) and cycles through them when turned on and takes 3 AA batteries.

I thought wouldn't it be a cool base to put a phr into? So I did =D with the help of bobhaha

This is the inside of the box

We decided to go with a simple lm317 driver and here we were testing it. It didn't work.... So we went to the local electronics shop and bought some new parts and tried again

Here is it working with the current set at ~ 58mA I had previously just hooked the diode up to my power supply and tried shining it onto the marble. I found that ~60mA gave a nice bright light without any worries with heat and longevity of the diode. When pushed to ~110mA it was glaringly bright

Put everything back together, modified the 3AA battery holder to accept 2 AAA sized lithium batteries (forget what they are called and they were the only lithiums we had) and also put a laser safety sticker =D

Shots of it working. 1st pic has a GITD clicky cap and second one is just balancing on the glass

Pretty happy with this build and I'd like to thank bobhaha for his time and help with this, Jayrob for the idea and also to Fiddy for giving me the diode!

It would look awesome at night!

I didn't see this either, I love it! I bet you can run it till the cows come home. Or till the batteries die.
