...As the title states...

If you want to skip the commentary, the link to pictures is near the bottom!

I've finally completed the >300mW violet pen I have been planning for the past couple months. I finally received the diode and here it is.

During the harvesting process, I must have put pressure on the "can" because once the diode was loose, I noticed a crack in the window. I had to carefully remove it... I was happy to discover that it survived surgery with no damage whatsoever.

This little laser is less than the length of a leadlight and roughly the same diameter.
It is powered by AAA size batteries (NiMH 1.4V per cell), driven by a V5 Flex, and houses the diode from an LG 10X Blu-Ray disc writer.
The lens used is the 405-G-1 from Jayrob.

It features a click-on/click-off forward clicky switch in the battery cap and a 405nm anti-reflection coated window in the aperture. It is o-ring sealed for resistance to humidity (not fully water resistant) and is focusable. It is run happily at an 80% duty cycle with 100 sec on.
It is set at 390mW when warm and will peak at 405mW when cold ;)

I believe that this diode lases at a shorter wavelength than my 12X. Although the power difference is less than 100mW, the 12X appears about 30% brighter and the 10X is a slightly "deeper" violet.

The construction was a little tedious, since there was very little space in the host. It is very solid with all-brass heat-sink. The module is press fit for good thermal conduction to the host.

This, to me, is the ideal pen laser. I think it is a great combination of portability, functionality, and power. And it looks great with my custom warning sticker.

I may make some design changes (this is a "prototype") and some minor improvements (including a copper heat-sink), since my original intent was to make a kit for this, but I haven't found a reasonably priced source for hosts like these. I have been searching for months.

Anyway... here are the pictures on my flickr:

Feel free to check out the other sets of my other lasers.
Thanks for looking.

Nice! That's a fairly long duty cycle for that little thing. I'd definetly like to have 300+mw in a pen.

Nice Pen build. Sorry to hear about your window. It's happened to me once before too.

Where exactly did you extract this laser diode from?
