Been working on this one on and off for a while...just a little tribute to my 3 burning lasers:

(note - what isn't explained in the description is what my CO2 laser did to that piece of fire proof ceramic glass - the rectangular piece that's shown glowing when hit by the beam - not the glass that shatters. After about 7 minutes of focused beam exposure my laser actually carved a small pit in that glass! Now, those of you here who have 60+ watt CO2 lasers ought to get yourselves some of this glass and see what you can do with it - with 60+ watts you might actually drill thru it!)

Oh i certainly hope you have goggles. I'd hate to think of what's happening to your eyes with that baby! Nice video.

Of course! I wouldn't even think of turning it (or the other two) on w/o eye protection!

Hey schrecken, what kind of power supply are you using to run that co2? I want to get a ~20W tube and I'm not sure how to power it. I'd like to build my own supply but I don't really know what I'm getting into... hehe

That's awesome! That's awesome right there. :D Most of us struggle to light matches from a distance and there you are, cutting glass
Very brave of you sticking your fingers so close to that beam. Those videos of CO[sub]2[/sub] lasers and meat freak me out. :p

Nice choice of music btw, Metallica is my favorite band :D I saw them in concert a month ago.

Edit for the photo upload, in case gooey doesn't notice. :D

The power supply is a homebuilt based on what I saw. You can get the circuit diagram from Amazing1 to power a 20W tube. The multiplier circuit gave it away. Iannini loves that particular multiplier layout.

The Beast was an Ebay purchase....it does have a "jury-rigged" appearance to it, though, perhaps not so much as my YAG. I don't know if the seller put it together himself (wasn't sold by anyone on here, was someone that didn't deal in lasers at all) or he bought it already assembled. It appeared to be new or little used when I bought it. Either way it runs great. Here are some close up pics where you can see the inner construction of it:

But yeah, if a relatively "puny" 20 watter like this can pierce and cut glass, and carve a pit in ceramic glass (actually I think it's the intense thermal expansion that causes the glass to crack and split when the beam is focused, if not focused it just melts its way thru) just imagine what many KILOWATTS can do! That would be mind-blowing, considering that industrial CO2 lasers can approach the 100Kw range, but then there's those lasers the military has...kinda like comparing the kinetic effect of a BB gun pellet with that of a bunker-busting bomb!
