I bought this as a kit from eBay, and when I first built it, ended up discharging the bridge cap bank into the gates of the IGBT's (~250 joules).

So, 3 days later, I had some new IGBT's, threw them in, and off it went, first time!

It could still do with a little more tuning, as sparks can reach up to 45cm, but I'm happy with it for now :)

If you want, I can post more spex etc, but for now, pics! Here's a quick video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zugqXYQq5E . Most are video snaps unfortunately, but I can't seem to get any good pics with my camera. Last 3 are my attemps at trying to get direct pics, which didnt work too well :(

It's $240US on eBay, a really good deal for the amount of work put into this thing and how well it works :)

Yep, made sure I left a slip at the door telling them to leave it there! :D Wouldn't have had time to pick it up till the weekend if they didn't. Loaded up with exams and assignments this week! :(

Glad I got it working again though. Without a scope too, HAH :p

Very nice! I have always wanted to build a Wimshurst generator but never did.

I for one, think your PIX came out just fine. QUESTION- with this type of generator, can you let the energy discharge go through your finger & make your hair stand on end ? Or is that only with a Van De Graff generator ? Just curious. rob

This is high frequency AC. To build up a charge, you need DC.

Touching any tesla coil is not recommended. Although it may not hurt much, it can do minor internal damage.

Yeah, you can touch the sparks and not feel a thing, but it can cause internal RF burns, which probably aren't very good for you :p

That's an extremely cool-looking coil! Seeing how it lights up a compact fluorescent from that far on its own, I can imagine you run this device far far away from any computer or test instrument? The electromagnetic field generated looks impressive. How many caps are in your bank?

Yeah, I run it in my kitchen away from most sensitive stuff. Haven't had a problem yet.

Bridge bank is 205V 1800uF *2, MMC is 2kV @ 8nf or something like that.

Hey!
I purchased the same kit from Bill. He's extremely helpful and puts a very nice kit together. I modified mine by replacing all the blue perspex with black perspex and replaced the blue LEDs with less bright yellow ones. I found the bright blue light took something away from the brilliant lightning like discharges.
I love this Tesla coil.
Cheers!
