match light at 215 Feet

Here is the Aries 225 burning matches at 215 feet with the help of a Melles Griot beam expander and a 3" magnifying glass.
Sorry about the quality of the movie - I was holding the camers, the match and a magnifying glass... :-[

When you first posted in the other thread you were going to attempt this I thought ha ha, no way because of the beam diameter being 50mm, or 2 inches. I didn't realize you were going to use a magnifying lens. BUT still, it is very impressive and I am certain is a new record. Way to go ;D

I doubt it is any type of record, the military has (or is working on) lasers that will knock down a missile in flight. No magnifying glass needed. ;D

Still, without the improved beam it wouldn't have been possible to do it since the beam was larger than the magnifying glass at that distance. ;)

I chose 215 feet because that is the distance from my patio table to my fence (lasr on the table, me at the fence lighting matches) - I wasn't really trying for a record, I just wanted to show it was possible.

I've got to ask this question. What was the distance between the magnifying lens and the match ?

Incredible work!! Now we need to get Morepower with his Herc and attempt a ~500ft light! Even more of a challenge, considering the divergences regardless of power. 300-350 is more reasonable I suppose! :D

Yeah, the military does have lasers that will knock down a missile in flight. They can even do it from other aircraft in which the laser is mounted in. I am sure they have stuff we have no clue about.

But I was thinking about the casual laser user when I posted. And you are the only person I know of whom has been able to light a match at that distance. As fast as the match lit, I would think you could go quite a bit further.

the match was about 1 foot from the magnifying glass.

I could potentially go a lot further, maybe 500 feet. Problem is it was my first test and i did it in my back yard. I'll need a bit more room for the next test... I'll also try it in daylight so you can see the distance in the light and verify the distance for yourself...

Sorry to say I'm not wowed like the rest. This isn't a 215 foot match light. It is a 12 inch match light since the magnifying lens is a short distance from the match. The setup is no different than what is done with a magnifying lens and the Sun lighting a match. Nobody would call that a 93 million mile match light, would they.
In order to qualify the lenses used to expand the beam and focus the beam would have to be close to the laser and the match would have to be 215 feet from the point where the last lens in the setup is positioned.

Steve actually has a pretty good point... I never really thought about it much. if you got all the optics in one setup, thats one thing... Lenses confuse me.

Although I completely agree with steve001 on the issue of distance, its good to see that melles expander being put to work!
