Reminds me of a scene from the movie Starship Troopers, where they all get some skull-tattoo made by a nifty robotic laser.

Not my cup of tea anyway.

The thing is, in a few days they will likely have nothing to show for their troubles (other than pain).....that appears to be a CO2 laser (though maybe a YAG) but CO2 lasers only burn the very top layer of skin, one reason they are great for skin resurfacing - wrinkle removal and the like. I knew people who had taken a direct hit from an unfocused 2Kw CO2 beam and they had no scars to show for it! Of course, a focused beam of any real power would cut and drill into flesh, but that would be different.

If nothing else I suppose those morons will have an area of freckle-free (and maybe hair-free, at least for a while) skin on their arms and hands....

yea since it only burns the top layer of the skin after a week or two the tattoo will start to disappear as the layers of skin are eventually shed

In a medical setting i'd believe that could be true, it all depends on power. As far as i know CO2 lasers -are- also used as contactless scalples, ablating undesired tissue and cauterizing the wound caused in one pass. I reckon that depends on power, and it takes skill to properly configure that.

These guys seem to be messing with a laser that's supposed to engrave images onto something (like metal, plastic, who knows, but not flesh).

Am i really the only one here that thinks it's a better Idea than a needle and ink? i mean, if this was professional, i would prefer it over a needle, laser burns arent as bad as needles.

but what makes it turn white like that? is it just 1 layer of skin it's burning? i wonder how bad that hurt..

The white is basically cooked skin cells - if you've ever tossed a piece of meat in a hot pan or on a grill it will often turn whitish in color where it is in contact with the heat. It's likely that's probably a mild 2nd degree burn inflicted by the laser, as they were able to feel pain. Hard to say what that would feel like - never been burned by a laser and don't intend to be! If you get a 3rd degree burn initially you don't feel anything - all of the skin layers including the nerves are dead. That sort of burn would be disfiguring.

I suppose a laser could be used in "body modification" but it would be more like branding. The final effect would be a scar in the shape of whatever design would be burned into the skin. You obviously won't get any coloration, as tattoos are colored inks that are injected under the skin.

I burn myself from time to time (Class IIIb levels) for the fun of it. Not anything that leaves a mark, however.

I had a tattoo of a triangle on my pointer finger for a week or so from my pulsar. It was black though, not white. I followed a black speck until it became a line. The skin on a finger is thick enough I can sacrifice the top few layers without much if any pain.

As disfiguring as... say... a tattoo?
