It was a little blurry but I'm pretty sure that said 2.5 kW Continuous Wave.

Yep, I've seen it. If it is 2.5k, That's equivalent to five microwaves.

but yeah it's an old video but awesome nonetheless

very nifty way to warm up the drinks! i need to take one of those snowboarding with me so i can make hot cocoa on the go ;)

just need a hand held one lol

just as soon as battery technology improves a little.. And they finish that trans-dimensional portal that can be used to evacuate all the heat from the little pointer.

Yeah, I've seen that one before - bet that "coffee maker" is way more expensive than any fancy model you'd ever find in even the ritziest department store!!! ;D

But seriously, being that's a YAG, it's a wonder it didn't just burn right thru the bottom of cup that only had the water in it - that wavelength goes right thru clear water.....though the beam didn't appear to be tightly focused, maybe that's why...

Like most energy emitting devices, microwaves are rated on input power. Lasers are rated on output power because of the many many ranges of efficiencies encountered in lasers. It wouldn't make any sense to give a CO2 a rating of 300W and an argon of 10KW if the CO2 output much more. Magnetrons are about 65% efficient. Most small/medium 800W microwaves only emit 500W of energy.

I think what's happening is the beam is focused and ultimately diverged when it enters the water and heats the bottom of the (ceramic?) cup which inherently transfers the heat to the water.
