Laser books and ebooks discussion / suggestions

I assume that this is an apropiate area to discuss Laser books and ebooks as media. I've downloaded some free and legal ebooks on Laser diodes and appreciate the historys of various Lasers. I hope this will help me in selection DVD writers in order to harvest LDs . What is particularly interesting is the history of blue diodes 405 nMs / 445 nms in particular .

You don't have to harvest laser diodes from DVD writers unless you really want to.

There are many places to buy parts and many members off them also if you want to bulid--if not many members make very reasonably price complete lasers at about $100.

Yes I'm aquainted with Sams Laser Faqs . Thats a very good source of information .

I harvest LDs from DVD writers because I have a limited veterans pension but I'm sure I can get some good prices from members of this website . Besides I hate to think of good electronic parte going to waste . I have second thoughts about the harvesting . I hope that I don't accidently use an infared LD . An unseen beam is a bit scary.

Of course they do. What is it you hope to learn?

Your OP suggests you seek information to catalog DVD players and the diodes they contain, so you in turn may harvest and locate the diodes you seek. The kinds of people that know this information are people harvesting and processing surplus gear from (typically) defunct businesses. They kind of keep that information secret, because they've earned the knowledge.

However, as already suggested, if your are seeking to buy, own and use laser diodes, we can point you to these surplus harvesting people to buy from. Some of them have excellent and long-established reputations and sell items at very reasonable rates.

DTR and Junktronix to name a few.

The technical articles are interesting and historical but in the practical real world all you need to do is buy a diode and driver and apply power unless your are looking to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks for pointing out wannburnstuff's thread on who who here at LPF . I'm impressed with this communities efforts with the Laser hobby . It was a good read.
Please don't mistake me with someone who wants to be spoon fed all the secrets you guys have acquired with hands on research , finding and testing components and cultivating resoures to bring to LPF's members. I'm just asking for what you think is a good read and the history of DVDs so I can select promising DVD readers. I don't purchase surplus from defunct vendors or such. I buy mine from second hand stores like the Salvation army thriff store so I'm not competing with any large scale harvesting dealers.
So thats my story . Just a simple request . I have ebooks that others might enjoy . Is there a upload/download area here ? These ebooks have beeen acquired free and legal. :0 :0

You will get hundreds of posts about same.

I hope whatever you are looking to harvest is for you? Would guess there is little to no market for used/second hand DVD diodes within the laser crowd.

One of my favorite reference books is The Laser Guidebook, second edition.

It covers the basics of everything; HeNe, HeCd, ions, metal vapor, semiconductor, solid state, Hg and Au, free electron, eximer, x-ray, salt, you name it!

I LOVE this book. It is my all time favorite for when I need to do some background research on something, or a refresher on a concept.

If I'm new getting into something, like currently HeCd, or firstly, HeNe, it's wonderful. It'll give you the basics on everything, and explain the jargon, the parts, how it works, why it works, history, graphs of known wavelengths, all of it.

Plus it was pretty cheap from Amazon.

If you're looking for a whole hearted book that will give you the basics, and stepping blocks on ANYTHING you'd want to know, this is your book.

The only (small) downside is that it isn't updated with the recent things like blue diodes, or brand new DPSS. However, you could speculate how they work based on the concepts it does have. Then when you look them up, you will have the knowledge to understand how they are different from the examples in the book.
