There is no fun shining a laser at flying objects,its just plain irresponsible and immature.

I think laser glasses would provide more vision than closed or blinded eyes, while trying to get 300+ people safely to the ground. ;-) I think its a goooood idea(JMHO).

Yes, it seems like a complete and extremely strict ban is imminent.

They wont ban them. Really, if you think about it, they already are banned.

I believe they will start enforcing the rules which are already in place a bit more, which we have already seen.

We all already know it is illegal to enter any >5mW laser into commerce without the correct paperwork from the FDA. This basically means that all >5mW lasers are already banned, unless they have been approved by the FDA/CDRH. The only exception to this rule is if you build the laser yourself, in which case the laser has not been entered into commerce. And, this is only 'OK' because it is not illegal to simply posses a laser. If you turn that laser on in public, is it now a public display and you are governed by all the CDRH rules, meaning that it would be illegal to operate the laser in public without approval for laser shows and the necessary safety features. They would be within their rights to give you a hefty fine for this, although it rarely, if never, happens.

So if you really look at the rules they are already pretty tight. The only reason why it hasn't seemed like it is because these rules haven't been heavily enforced in the 'pointer' community. Ask some of the professional laser show guys about the CDRH/FDA.

And, although this will probably make a few people mad, I think >5mW pointers should be illegal anyway unless it has all the proper safety features. Additionally, I think there should be an age restriction on them, maybe 18 or so. Sorry to you younger guys who are good and responsible with lasers, but as a general rule the 12-17 year old age group as a whole isn't really known for their good decision making

I think that people are irresponsible with lasers because they don't comprehend them well. Let's take for example another possibly dangerous hand held machine : guns. People understand that they are dangerous and that you can't play with those like toys because they are well understood. Lasers are for many people a mistery, the laser mytology post shows it well. Not to mention how Hollywood physics have made them even more mysterious. If the governement had more publicity and informations campaigns, people would understand the risks.

I am aware that they are already banned. Like what you said, I think they will enforce the ban much more in the future.
