Hey all, today I stopped by my local computer repair shop. I walked in and politely asked if they had any dvd burners. The guy said, "depends on what you want them for". I immediately thought he would reject someone asking for them to repurpose the diode. But being honest I said "Well my hobby is making lasers and I can utilize the diodes within any dvd burners. To my surprise, the man said he does the same! I was ecstatic... FINALLY someone I met IRL who understands lasers. But he went back and brought out a 16x drive. Specifically it was the Lightscribe GWA-4166B. I'm kind of considering making it into a laser for the guy! Or at least giving him a "thank you" laser from my pen-style collection.
I quickly located the diodes and extracted them along with the optics. I think one is turning mirror, which is always handy to have!
Anyway here are the photos of the diodes. The diode still in the heatsink is the 650nm Short Closed Can diode. It is later shown extracted further. The IR Diode is the one with the shinier can that has the black numbering on it.
