Oh well, 'it can been seen from outer space'. I suppose that in itself isnt false, but it would mean this is not the only laser that can be seen from outer space either.

I think it would not require much to make this claim, only the correct circumstances that provide the contrast. If you stand in the middle of a desert at night, and the ISS flies overhead, pointing at it would probably make you visible with a minumum amount of power.

Considering 1 mrad divergence, the dot would be 350 meters radius at the iss altitude, or almost 400.000 square meters. With 100 mW output power, this would mean something in the order of 0.25 uW/m2. Going into an eye you get another 10^7 or so reduction, to 0.025 pW.

But there is the catch: We have 2.5 E-14 watts entering the eye. This equates to about 67000 532nm photons per second. As it has been demonstrated that the eye can see a single photon, i'd say its very feasible that this laser would be visible by dark adapted eyes. Then again, this also goes for a 1 mW cat toy ;)

Hehe.. i wondered if his claim was bullshit, so i calculated it roughly.

It doesnt surprise me though: I remeber an experiment where radio amateurs succeeded in using a laser beam to send audio of the british channel (which is 22 km wide). They reported being able to see the laser on the other side. A beam expander was used with only a 5 mW red laser, but they did use binoculars to see the other side. This was a location where there were lights around and behind the laser, so its not the limit of visibility at all.

I'd say that all claims to from what distance a laser can be seen are bullshit. The limiting factor is the curvature of the earth, even if you are on a tall building. It would require climbing a mountain to test the limit.

Gotta give it to him though. While no noteworthy laser achivements had been made there, at least we can be proud on behalf of kip that he probably holds the record for most bullshit spewn in a single video session.

That record achievement you claim gave me a good laugh :)
+1 for you

tl;dr.

He also says for verbatim "intergalactic range"... right. nearest galaxy... 85 miles is nothing. Probably using the 1W, but typ. operation 60 miles.
yeeaaah, trip to Andromeda any1? got 3 free seats in my car

and btw (@Benm): the world's longest laser connection was done somewhere in the 1970 (don't know exactly), they used some huge <1mW IR HeNe to transmit audio over something like 100 miles... (this was posted here some time ago, I don't remember the exact numbers)

LOL. This goes to show how little I've been around here lately. WL couldn't even produce 1W of 445. There's no way they can produce 1W of 532. Especially under $1000. Green may be getting cheaper but it isn't that cheap yet.

It's just a money making scheme like most youtube users, what else is there to say?

Some funny comments from his Make a Laser Pointer Burn! - YouTube video

Unfortunately my laser pointer broke during this process I'm disappointed I just lost 100 dollars?

i? don't know if my laser is like yours and i can do the same you did in this vid coz the last time i did this i permanently broke my laser

I tried to do this with my laser today! Not exactly a laser from Wicked Laser, and I actually completely broke my laser. The button was not removable, so instead I tried to pull the top of, to get inside of it. The top got of? easily, but the circuit board didn't come out. When I tried to pull that out, I broke the laser diode, so if you can't remove the button, I dont suggest you to get inside any other way.

i? did this and it broke my laser

AAA I just broke my? $2 laser T_T

No that surprising indeed... provided you can find a line of sight path 100 miles long it would be a fun one to replicate.

As for intergalatic - sure, make the claim. It would take just 5 million years to proof it wrong :D

Looks like good ol' kipkay may have screwed the pooch on this thing. Go look at the comments on his video, the winners don't exist on youtube?

LC forum rules do not apply here. I laughed. Last time I checked, he had like 5 posts IIRC? lol
