When I was outside tonight, I saw Jupiter and Venus right next to each other up in the sky. I thought it would make a pretty cool picture if I fired a laser up toward them.

I think it turned out pretty good. I might have to start doing more of this sort of thing.

Yeah, I don't know, it was still pretty early. The street light was out, so that's good. I cropped out the neighbor's house lights on the bottom, but you can see the lights in the background lighting up the sky.

Too bad the sky out here is pretty horrible from all the light pollution.
The Orion nebula will hang around for a while longer. I've gotten a few decent photos of that guy plus some lasers in December.
Mars is high in the sky between 9pm & 2am and Saturn should be up there around that time as well.

Nice photo btw. It's nice to see that some people pay attention to the night sky.

It's sad that I could probably count all the stars I can see from my house. :(

I am not used to seeing them in so close proximity, but man they were bright today.

That "turning off" street light thing never works for my town's lights. Maybe I do it wrong :p

Have you ever tried it?

Canadian lights (most) work off timers(PLC systems), cause the sensors will get covered by snow and ice.

Yeah, the light pollution sucks. You have to go out to the desert to get a decent view of the sky.

Hmm, yeah. To be honest I was just wondering if you "turned off" the street light:shhh::p

OOooh crafty, very crafty. lol No, I didn't turn it off, but I just learned a new trick. :D

It depends on how the lights are setup. If they are on a timer it won't matter.

If they have a sensor though, you can turn them off by shining a >100mW laser at them. I tried it a couple times a while back, but don't want to do any damage to the sensor, so aside from the one light in a park that I did it to, and that turned back on, I don't really do it.

Good picture ! I love to see astro-photo's.

The brighter one is Venus and the closest distance in the sky is 3 degree. The moon could fit 6 times in the gap. :)

Very nice picture !
What camera did you use ?
+1

Jim

Thanks guys. :)

I used a Cannon PowerShot SX110 IS. Not super fancy, no removable lenses or anything like that, but you can control the shutter and stuff a bit. 15 second exposure... It's a longest it would let me take.

good picture. I was out last night -- enjoying summer like warmth -- and also noticed Jupiter and very bright Venus. Quite a spectacle. Winter constellations are setting now, say goodbye to Sirius and Orion for another year.
